Audrey Geisel, widow of Dr. Seuss, dead at 97

Audrey Geisel, the widow of children's author Dr. Seuss and longtime overseer of his prolific and lucrative literary estate, has died.

Random House Children's Books announced that she died Wednesday at age 97. She died at her home in La Jolla, California.

Hardly surprising. Most guys are much happier to interact and put effort into older children who have more fully formed personalities and are more capable of deeper thoughts and concepts and have widening interests.

Doctor Seuss: A Different Perspective

In Dr. Seuss’ own words: Dr. Seuss debunked that idea that he made up his stories with his own words in an interview he gave Arizona magazine in June 1981:

They think I did it in twenty minutes. That ***** Cat in the Hat took nine months until I was satisfied. I did it for a textbook house and they sent me a word list. That was due to the Dewey revolt in the Twenties, in which they threw out phonic reading and went to word recognition, as if you’re reading a Chinese pictograph instead of blending sounds of different letters. I think killing phonics was one of the greatest causes of illiteracy in the country.

That quote alone tells me he had his head screwed on straight (more or less) and was probably not an irredeemable leftist.

He was a leftist. He abhorred the pro-life movement using his phrase, “ A person’s a person, no matter how small,” and his widow was even more radical about it; she became one of the biggest funders of abortion in the country.

But remember that your shaping of a baby and small child can greatly influence the wonderful older child that will develop. However, lots of men leave that “mucky stage” to the moms, true.

I know he wasn’t in perfect agreement politically but he made some genius works here and there. I think of them and reference them. There are a lot of King Yertles, and Sneeches with and without stars, around here. Beauty was well dealt with Gertrude Mcfuzz. Inflexibility with the Northgoing and Southgoing creatures.
