One of three men convicted in the 1998 dragging death of a Jasper man is set to be executed next spring. John William King's execution date is set for April 24, 2019 at 6 p.m., Newton County Sheriff Billy Rowles told 12News. Rowles was the sheriff in Jasper County when Byrd was tragically and brutally murdered over 20 years ago... Lawrence Russell Brewer, 44, was executed in 2011 for the crime and Shawn Berry, 42, is serving life in prison. Byrd's death sparked legislation about hate crimes in the resulting public outcry throughout the last two decades. President Barack Obama signed The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act on October 22, 2009 as part of the the National Defense Authorization Act for 2010 (H.R. 2647).

Twenty years for the second one, third one not eligible because of age. How quick does your state cycle them ?
It is a curse to have a common border with Mexico. Texas taxpayers have spent billions from their paychecks to keep the murderers from our malignant Latin culture locked up while government lawyers try to get them off Death Row for 20 or 30 years. There should be a 7-year limit for appeals, and after that, execution.
When death sentences take so long that most people don’t remember the crime it loses it’s deterrent value.

One guy I looked at was 42 years on death row.
There is many that are 25+ years.

On June 7, 1998, Byrd, age 49, accepted a ride from Shawn Berry (age 23),
Lawrence Russell Brewer (age 31) and John King (age 23). Berry, who was driving,
was acquainted with Byrd from around town. Instead of taking Byrd home,
the three men took Byrd to a remote county road out of town, beat him
severely, urinated and defecated on him and chained him by his ankles
to their pickup truck before dragging him for approximately 3 miles
(4.8 km). Brewer later claimed that Byrd’s throat had been slashed by
Berry before he was dragged. However, forensic evidence suggests that
Byrd had been attempting to keep his head up while being dragged, and
an autopsy suggested that Byrd was alive during much of the dragging.
Byrd died about halfway along the route of his dragging after his
right arm and head were severed when his body hit a culvert. Byrd’s
brain and skull were found intact, further suggesting he maintained
consciousness while being dragged.
