Ketonic diet is one of the stranger fads to come around the bend. Normally, ketosis is considered a pathological condition associated with diabetes. Why would anyone want to artificially induce ketosis through their diet? That has the same logic as intentionally creating a vitamin C deficient diet to induce scurvy.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is pathologic and can happen in diabetes. Ketosis, or ketogenesis, on the other hand, is a normal physiological process which occurs overnight to keep fuel in your blood unless you interrupt it with late night snacking.

Ketoacidosis, which is what diabetics can get, is not ketosis, it's not even close to the same thing. It's like the difference between having a slight buzz from a couple of beers versus having alcohol poisoning.

You’re confusing ketosis with ketoacidosis.

Ketosis is not a pathological condition. It is simply using fat instead of sugar for energy metabolism.

Ketoacidosis is a complication of diabetes, which ironically, can be treated with a ketogenic diet.

It’s not strange at all - it’s a meat/nut/greens diet similar to what our ancestors ate before developing wheat and starch crops.

Thanks to our advancements in agriculture we’ve made our wheat, corn and rice super energized and easily digested - these get broken down immediately into sugar in our system and, if not quickly burned off, get stored as fat by the body. It’s very easy in this society to overeat these items (remember the old food pyramid) which is why we’re all growing so fat. (Lack of movement is helping there too)

Keto, as Atkins proposed it, was only meant to be a temporary diet until the fat could be burned off and then those items could be reintroduced sparingly.

There’s also speculation that there’s something in the refined grains that’s harmful to the systems of some people which is why they some benefits when switching to an all meat diet. (Whether a genetic issue, or how the grains have been hybridized or possibly something with the pesticides used on the crops)

Other than lose weight, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, lower blood sugar and A1c, improve blood work results overall, and not be hungry all the time, the results EVERYONE that I know who went on the diet has had, I can’t understand why anyone would be on it. After all we have the USDA recommendations that have virtually eliminated obesity in America, why do Keto?

“Normally, ketosis is considered a pathological condition associated with diabetes.”

yet another ignoramus spreading misinformation on FR. you are ignorantly confusing ketosis, which is nothing more than the benign condition that occurs when the body burns its own stored fat and ketoacidosis, which is a potentially fatal condition resulting from uncontrolled diabetes. the two conditions are totally unrelated except for having the syllable “keto” in both words.
