Government shutdown: What’s open and closed in DC

Garbage piles up on the National Mall during the government shutdown

WASHINGTON — Sure, the District itself is open for business, but as the term “Federal City” implies, most federally funded locations are shuttered during the government shutdown, which has been in effect since Dec. 22.

Not even the National Park Service website is being updated.

It reads:

“During the federal government shutdown, this website will not be updated and may not reflect current conditions. Some national parks may remain accessible to visitors; however, access may change without notice. Some parks are closed completely. Some visitor services may be available when provided by concessioners or other entities. For most parks, there will be no National Park Service-provided visitor services, such as restrooms, trash collection, facilities, or road maintenance.”
WTOP has an FAQ about what to expect during the shutdown.

The Zoo’s famous panda cam has also been turned off, but the animals are still being fed and cared for, reports NBC Washington.

As of Tuesday morning, WTOP’s Alejandro Alvarez reports that it’s mostly news crews outside the National Zoo and tourists who are confused about why it’s not open.

Folks in the mortgage industry are crying over not being able to process VA/HUD/IRS forms to get loans closed.

My daughter drove through the DC beltway during rush hour yesterday hoping the shutdown would make traffic bearable. It didn’t

So they shut off a webcam that costs nothing and takes no monitoring?

Like we’re supposed to care?

They never complain about all the trash after a “Women’s” or LGBT protest march. D.C. should be used to this.

I do a portion of the DC beltway each day on my commute from Alexandria to Laurel. I'm surprised at how little the traffic has eased - although it has, slightly.

I think part of the slowdowns can be attributed to an increase in accidents! When there was an easing of congestion, I did notice the idiots around me driving recklessly (more so than usual).

WTOP is a mouthpiece for the left, so they're trying to highlight this as an "isn't this just awful" piece for consumption by the masses.

When there's a similar mess left by a leftist protest march? Crickets...

Shut down except for the one thing that probably should be shut down.....elected official’s pay. The non-elected people who aren’t working are not the ones who caused the problem, are they?

My neighbor drives a semi from Aberdeen, MD to Fairfax, VA every day. I don’t know how he does it.

It goes to show what theatre this shut down really is. Outside of the PandaCam, Government is operating.

My son works as a contract employee at a NASA facility. He said it’s tough to get in because most gates are closed, but they can’t shut down space missions.

The only group I feel bad for are the Coasties. They’re essential, but since they’re not under the DoD (the Coast Guard is under Homeland Security) they aren’t getting their paychecks.

Worth repeating:

If you or I don't show up for work or don't our friggin' jobs, we don't get paid, and we get terminated!

You have to go out, you don't have to get paid... (Old Guard Rule, updated and paraphrased)

Service credit unions offer 0% interest loans, payment suspensions, etc. during these shutdowns. See Seawest CGFCU.

I do a portion of the DC beltway each day on my commute from Alexandria to Laurel.

My wife is a DoD employee so she still works (she is listed as essential so she would have to whether she got paid or not). She says the traffic is about the same traveling from Stafford to Ft Meade.

This raises the question, why does the federal government run a zoo? Cities across the country do have zoos, because they are interesting for the locals. There is nothing “special” about the “National zoo”, it’s just another place to pen up a bunch of animals so that visitors can see them, so why don’t we turn the zoo over to the District of Columbia, and then maybe just give them some one each year to compensate them for the additional traffic they get because of national interest in visiting DC?

Meanwhile, why are people such pigs? Why do people think it is OK to just pile their garbage up next to full trash cans? Pick your damn trash up, put it in your own little plastic bags, and take it with you. Stop being slobs.

I understand that out west, there’s some national park where people are leaving toilet paper and crap on the street, like they need a federal worker to wipe their butts for them.

“”They never complain about all the trash after a “Women’s” or LGBT protest march. D.C. should be used to this.””

Excellent point. I also have to wonder what makes garbage collectors non-essential!!!!! Seems their jobs should be treated as a health matter..are they not “sanitary” workers and don’t we rely on sanitary conditions in our homes and work environments to stay healthy?

And don’t FORGET - they also collect paychecks when they are NOT doing their jobs because they are running for higher offices. They are not in the Senate or the House during any of those campaigns and there are strict (ahem!) rules about not collecting pay for days absent without a good reason! I don’t believe anything is ever done about it - that I can find anyway. There are amounts still outstanding from when Edwards and Kerry skipped out on their jobs to run for president...how many years ago was that? National Taxpayer’s Union used to keep track of those deadbeats but I don’t know if they still do. It’s definitely something that should be enforced...

There is always some jackass that thinks it their constitutional responsibility to bang into some other moron and eff-up traffic for the rest of us.
