David Steven Bell can be seen in the video, initially posted to Instagram by an unidentified person, in an argument with a group of young girls outside of the Asheville Mall. You can watch the video above. The incident occurred on Saturday, January 12. Bell is white and most of the girls in the video are black. It is not clear what occurred before the video started.
In the video, Bell can be heard yelling to the girls to “break it up.” As other girls yell at him, one can be heard asking, “who is he?” Bell walks menacingly at the girls and they appear to back off. One girl then pushes Bell in the back, barely shifting his balance.
As the girl walks toward Bell, he shoves her backward, sending her into a metal pole and nearly to the ground. The girl gets back up and Bell punches with a closed fist, knocking the girl out and down to the ground. The other girls then run away screaming as the video ends.
Online jail records show that Bell is 6 foot 5 inches tall and weighs 250 pounds.
According to the Asheville-Citizen Times, the incident occurred about 7 p.m. at the Asheville Mall. Police spokeswoman Christina Hallingse told the newspaper that an off-duty officer who was already at the mall arrested Bell after the incident. The girl declined medical treatment and was not taken to the hospital, Hallingse told the Citizen-Times.

So the white lady and girl with the beanie on are his family? Seems that he was protecting them.
To me, it really comes down to who attacked first. The age/size difference is irrelevant if it’s self defense.

No excuse at all as far as what’s on the video.
These out of control feral punks were aggressive toward him and his family, the animal hoard were in a group attack surrounding him and physically harassing he and his family.
They got what they deserved. This was a vocal and physical pack attack by feral out of control animals.

If he let the girls continue to fight he’d have parents on his butt.....since he did something to stop it e still has the law working against him.
We live in a lawless society led by the Demorats and media now where everybody is at each others throats in one way or another.
Kids travel in packs like stalking animals today. Ready and willing to pick fights so they can post it to their social media accounts...or sue somebody or both.
There are adults that act similarly. I ran into a couple of them several months back with a third “yes” woman.
My guess is a couple of them are meth addicts or heavy consumers of something with spirits.
Maybe it’s in the local water down there.
Bell and his family could have walked away. Instead, he could have killed that kid when there was no lethal threat to his family. Self defense is not a excuse to go Rambo on people. It is proportional to the threat. Bell escalated this from the moment he got involved and is lucky he isn’t being charged with felonies.

I'm thinking the same thing. It looks to me as if she came right at him with clenched fists, ready to slug him.
If men are going to be chivalrous and refrain from hitting women, it's incumbent on women never to use the men's chivalry against them.
I see a man surrounded by yapping hyenas when one attacks and is taken down by the man causing the other hyenas to run off. The fact that the man is white and the hyenas are not full grown makes no difference to me.

We were not there. We don't know what threat he saw or felt.
Did you count the number of kids surrounding him\them?
What we did see was a man (and maybe his family) surrounded by a bunch of youths....
In real time that must have been somewhat scary...he gets pushed in the back...
a kid comes at him and he pushes her away.
She gets up and runs to him cocks to hit him and he decks her.
This one has to play out. A whole story needs to be told, beginning to end, before we condemn or condone the guy.
True, I don't know what happened before. I do know some basics about self defense under the law. Also that avoiding fights means you don't risk getting arrested or prosecuted, because District Attorneys don't care how justified a person feels about decking someone. Those kids are citizens with rights too. A bunch of kids being noisy outside a mall is a nuisance, not a threat to life or limb. He and has family could have gone back inside and called security or management, or waited a few minutes until those kids parents showed up, moved on or calmed down. Or maybe, just walked through them to their car and left.
No matter what anyone wants to say, he compromised his mantle of innocence by how he acted. He was the adult, they were minors, the higher standard of care is on him, not the kids. There's also disparity of force in that he's weighs at least hundred pounds heavier than a eleven year old girl. He knocked her out into a metal pole, when there was no threat justifying that level of force. Self defense is proportional to the threat, and noisy 11 and 12 year olds aren't much of a threat under the law.
A lot of people on these threads have a macho view of self defense that does not match reality under the law.

What happened before the video started? Was he trying to break up a fight or get his family through the mini-mob to his vehicle? Or both? The girls were in swarm-mode from what I can tell. If he had been a meeker man, I strongly suspect they would’ve tried to knock him down. The one he pushed seemed intent on doing so.
Was he supposed to wait until one of them stabbed him with a knife or bite him until he reacted? Why did the assault victim decline medical attention? Was she afraid a doctor would find her under the influence of a drug?
