This action by the family that had already lost two sheep to this cougar seems to be a lot more effective in protecting their remaining sheep than the Living with Lions plan, and permanent.

A California family's decision to shoot and kill a hungry mountain lion during the animal's attempt to feast on its third sheep over three consecutive nights is being fiercely debated by locals, as some argue killing the big cat wasn't necessary.

Nutrition counseling and behavior modification would have only taken a few years to resolve the problem.

Sums up the border debate perfectly.

...killing the lion via a depredation permit would do no good...

Not so!!! Killing THIS lion means THIS lion won't eat/kill another pet or any other livestock.

Ever.

Those sissies whining about killing this cat should immediately reimburse the sheep owners for the losses they’ve incurred.

Then be forced to adhere to that ancient philosophy...mind your own damn business.

Ooh, it had a “special” collar on it, that makes all the difference.

“SSS” Shoot, Shovel, Shutup. Works for cougars, too ;)

California Liberals.

“Stop the car, dear, so the kids can go out and pet the kitty. There will still be plenty of time to drive to the desert so they can play with the rattlesnakes.”

I believe that at least two humans have been killed by mountain lions in the past year.

Mountain lions have no place anywhere that humans are .
They are a threat and should always be eliminated.
Our ancestors did the right thing and got rid of them

Not to mention actually protecting other people from the now-dead mountain lion, unlike the GPS crowd, which would merely tag the bold mountain lion and have him roam in populated areas after finishing off the sheep.

Co-exist with carnivorous wildlife? Meh.

I wish that every cougar lover could have a one on one visit by a hungry and poed cougar.

Mountain lion, deer plunge into California family’s backyard pool during wild chase.

Glendale residents Rachel Wong and her husband said they knew instantly something wild happened in their backyard when they woke up and looked outside Thursday morning. The pair decided to review their home surveillance tape to get a clue at what exactly went down — and that’s when they spotted the encounter between the mountain lion and deer.

“It was pretty scary, kind of creepy,” Wong told KCAL. “I saw the video,” “I ran into the room and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, did you see this?’ And I showed [my husband].”

The video shows the mountain lion leaping toward the fleeing deer and landing in the middle of the family’s underground pool.

The mountain lion quickly exits the water as the deer swims around for a few more seconds before escaping from the opposite side of the pool.

“It was pretty scary, kind of creepy.”— Rachel Wong

Another camera on the side of the family’s home spotted the mountain lion again chasing the deer as it exits the water and makes a dash for the nearby woods.

I’d put a bullet between its eyes as well if It was near my home and already killed 2 of my animals.

It wants to stay in the mountains and woods, fine, it wants to come to my doorstep.... see you later.

"But Audubon Canyon Ranch, which just started following the mountain lion with a special collar last week, has encouraged landowners to call their Living with Lions research team to capture and remove any wild animals that attack livestock."

They should encourage the lions to call their Living with People research team.
