Fossil Vehicle Sales Are Officially Now Decreasing In China, Europe, & USA

China, The World’s Largest Auto Market

In the world’s largest auto market, China, total light duty vehicle (LDV) sales declined in 2018 relative to 2017. This was the first year-on-year drop since 1992. Yet, in this shrinking overall auto market, EV sales (including BEVs and PHEVs) almost doubled in volume to 1.1 million, from 600,000 in 2017.

Europe, The World’s 2nd-Largest Auto Market

The European auto manufacturers’ association reports a very similar picture (here we are counting the EU plus the European Free Trade Area). Although total LDV sales very slightly increased in 2018 (17.75 million) over 2017 (17.68 million), more than 100% of that increase was from EVs, which had 408,000 sales in 2018, up from 307,000 in 2017 (figures from EV Volumes).

USA, The World’s 3rd-Largest Auto Market

Total sales of light vehicles in the USA in 2017 were 17.230 million, and increased fractionally in 2018 to 17.274 million (figures from marklines). EV Volumes estimates 360,000 EV sales in 2018, up from 200,000 in 2017. That means that — taken on their own — combustion vehicle sales fell from 17.03 million in 2017 to 16.91 million in 2018.

I’d like to obtain a fossilized ‘56 Triumph TR-3, my favorite ride back in the 60s...

I’d prefer a 58 Jag with a V-12.

At one time your comparison would have worked for the IPhone vs Nokia.

[Next up, a horse in every garage.]

Once bicycles were invented, the horse became obsolete as an everyday means of transportation on paved roads. And I understand that mountain bikes can go off-road to a hair-raising extent, if Youtube videos are anything to go by.

I don’t see a lot of new electric vehicles where I live.

I don’t see a lot of new vehicles period.

The German and Japanese luxury car producers decided to increase sales by coming up with subcompact vehicles.

The car makers convinced themselves that Americans wanted SUVs for their style. They wanted pickups to display their manliness.

Maybe Americans wanted SUVs and pickups because they are larger.

The Baby Boomers are getting old.

I like my car, but it is fast becoming a literal pain for me to get into.

And my pickup, while higher off the ground, is much the same.

I have to bend over to get into it.

And don’t look at the prices of new cars. Sheesh.

I am an electrical engineer so I have some credibility here. EV’s are not ready for prime time. This most due to the long recharge time. RV’s have some urban applications and are viable where extreme weather is uncommon; think southern California. But in general, the internal combustion engine has a long long future ahead of it.

I believe but electric car vehicle sales are going more or less straight up. Granted we’re still talking about about small numbers coming off a small base. But the big car manufacturers have all announced plans for big electric car roll outs in the coming years. The number of announced battery gigawatt factories went from about 17 in 2017 to about 85 in 2018.

You can FORCE technology that isn’t economically ready on the public. That is very inefficient and wasteful. If you are stupid and think the technology is viable then go buy one. I won’t stop you.
