Mysterious Cloud Of Chaff Lights Up Radar Over Dozens Of Miles Of New Mexico Airspace
The Drive ^ | 03/07/2019 | Tyler Rogoway

The event occurred on March 5th, 2019 at around 19:20 UTC, which equates to roughly 12:20pm local time. Over a swath of sky beginning to the west of Cannon Air Force Base, the plume first appears, covering roughly 30 miles over a couple hours time. Cannon AFB is used by Air Force Special Operations Command and is home the 27th Special Operations Wing and its MC-130s, AC-130s, CV-22s, MQ-9s, U-28s, C-146s and other propeller-driven aircraft, some of which could have deployed the chaff from their expendable countermeasures systems.

If you had to get a very high value drug plane across the border for a ninety mile flight, it might make sense to fly a couple of modified “crop dusters” to release a cloud of chaff at 10-12,00 feet and then fly quickly under it to a remote airfield.

I was thinking “drug flight” too.

But maybe of five or ten aircraft, flying in formation.

“I was thinking “drug flight” too.”

Chaff must be tuned to the expected frequencies. I doubt it would effect military radars which can rapidly change frequencies to adapt to new conditions. This was some yahoo with a bit of old ordinance.

True. When the RAF used chaff when bombing Hamburg in 1942, the initial results were fantastic, wiped out German radar coverage.

But the Nazis quickly found out how it worked and changed frequencies. Of course, you could use “broadband” chaff, with filaments of different lengths, but that would increase weight and decrease hiding density...

The best final defense of big surface capital ships being attacked by stealthy missiles or drones would be rapid firing chaff canons to “shield” them.

This is the third one in the past few months - no explanation for any of them.

B-52s had chaff dispensers when I was stationed at Walker AFB at Roswell fifty three years ago. It is nothing new.

About a year ago, through Ukraine, the US acquired a working copy of the most recent model Russian anti-aircraft radar. My guess is that this was a test of its ability to deal with chaff.

At which point modern drones or missiles are smart enough to switch to emissions homing. The modern surface ship has to radiate to coordinate CIWS fire.

First rule of modern warfare: You radiate, you die.

Aardvarks

Those are the funniest things to see flapping those stubby little wings and just barely getting airborne.😀

They do fly much better than Pigs as the 'Varks are more aerodynamic.
