PPB: 60 applicants, only 3 passed background checks (Portland Police Bureau)

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- There are now 120 sworn officer vacancies in the Portland Police Bureau. At a City Council meeting Tuesday, Chief Danielle Outlaw shared some of the challenges they face in hiring new people and filling those positions.

The assistant chief told the City Commissioners that out of more than 60 people who applied for public safety specialist jobs, only 3 passed background checks. The biggest reasons for their disqualification is past drug use or dishonesty in their application.

Police applicants who have used marijuana in the past year don't pass a PPB background check because marijuana remains illegal under federal law.

With so many vacancies in the PPB, some City Council members wondered if there should be fewer supervisors and more patrol officers.

"Is there a way to reconfigure your workforce to have more officers on the street rather than in supervisor or specialty units?" Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty asked.

"I'm sure there is a way to flatten the hierarchy," Outlaw said. "But the issue with that is to maintain accountability and chain of command."

Chief Outlaw? That’s as bad as the late Phillipine Churches Cardinal Sin.

Why marijuana in the past year??

Test the blood and hair even. That can trace back like 6 months I think.

And then give random tests.

I’m guessing the guys that admit to it likely have it in their stream still or would say no to the question, though.

I was chatting with the fashion-model dressed, white, female, VP for ITT, the company I worked for. The issue was security. She stated she would hire an ex-con to work in our defense plant in preference to somebody who had a clean record because, “he deserved a chance.” I asked, “What about the guy who has kept his nose clean for his entire life? Doesn’t he deserve a chance too?” Her cheeks colored up and I decided it was time to change the subject. Yes, she was pissed off at me.

The reason we were having this meeting was because the plant where I worked was using an outside vendor to supply the stock. Those uncleared, unvetted people would come in and service the vending machines that dispensed everything from bolts to subassemblies. The Navy found out they were wandering around among deployable hardware and in certified stock and they were justifiably upset. The company didn’t want anything to do with certifying that the vendor’s employees met ITAR (International Trafficking in Arms Regulations) and other security protocols. And, yes, apparently some of those companies were hiring people who would not normally be allowed in our facility. But, that was okay with the woke VP. Her social agenda was much more important than whatever the Navy wanted.

I think if you asked Colorado cities the same question, the answer will be the same. Even in cities like Atlanta or Memphis, I would suspect that 50-percent of the recruits fail on the drug-test.

Obviously, and their statistics are the proof, their standards are way too high. When you live in a liberal area, you must lower your standards. Sure the cops are probably going to be more like the surrounding population. But that is a good thing because they can better identify with the criminals around them. This will cause better community relations and everyone will be happier. People will eventually learn to live and get along with the cops because they are all brothers in mind. No more anti cop activities...not needed because they are no different from the population. So lower the standards and it will be a better world.

...and don’t think for a minute that there are not liberals in that community who would buy what I am saying here. Our common problem in the USA is a general and nationwide lowering of standards. This is how every great failed civilization before us began their eventual fall.

Our society has crumbled because of 100 years of assault by Communists within our borders.

They hold the chairs of media, academia, unelected office, and corporate boards. And they are filthy rich.

Just deputize antifa...there wouldn’t be any change in law enforcement from what it is anyhow....in Portland.

How difficult is it to pass a background check? I recently received a NEXUS card...which allows one to,among other things, pass easily and quickly over the US/Canadian border and also gives one special considerations during airport security checks, etc.

To get one one must pass a background check by both the US *and* Canadian governments.

I'd be willing to bet that 99.99% of Freepers would be able to get one if they applied. So why is it so difficult in Portland?

“The Navy found out they were wandering around among deployable hardware and in certified stock and they were justifiably upset.”

I’ll just bet they were. You’re lucky they didn’t yank the contract on the spot.

I’m sure this kind of foolishness is going on at contractors like your company all over the country. I shudder to think what a smart and determined enemy could do to our supply chain.

Because they ask and test for dope. If that was requirement for the nexus card, the potheads here in FR would fail so your percentage is way off. Lying and doing dope go hand in hand so that’s another disqualifyer.

One of the big problems is policing in Portlandia has become so onerous for the cop on the beat that they are bleeding staff at lightspeed. Also the word may be out and no one qualified wants the job, so you’re left with the barrel scrapings.

“The biggest reasons for their disqualification is past drug use or dishonesty in their application. “

Past use of marijuana should not be disqualifying absent other issues.

This is just plain dumb.

If their pee and/or hair test is clean it shows they are not current users.

I suspect you’re going somewhat overboard with the number of so called potheads running around on free republic.

It’s been over 30 years since I even smelled the stuff, although I enjoyed it when I was young. I’m not sure that qualifies me as a pothead.lol

I thought Portland police are always being told to stand down when the anarchists and antifa rioters come to town to destroy the downtown and businesses?

Why would anyone need to pass a background check for a "non" law enforcement job?

Indicative of where our society had devolved into.

How interesting.

A black female police chief in the whitest major city of the United States.

Interesting that non-whites have to have preferences when they’re in the minority...and when they’re in the majority.

In other words, all the time.

Wonder how all the white 25 year police captains on the force felt about that.

Danielle will no move quickly to make Portland more like Oakland.

Should be charming.

Maybe some employers think that using MJ shows you might not have good judgement & also that you might do so again.
