(CNN) It took awhile, but the effort to rid a Georgia stream of its offensive name has finally succeeded.
Runaway Negro Creek, a small waterway on the state's Skidaway Island near Savannah, has been officially renamed Freedom Creek.
The US Board on Geographic Names, which maintains uniform usage of place names throughout the federal government, voted to OK the name change during a meeting last week.

The move to change the name gained momentum last year as people complained it was culturally insensitive.
It also highlights a small piece of history. The original name dates back to at least the Civil War, when it's believed escaped slaves from a nearby plantation would swim across the creek to freedom on islands controlled by Union troops, CNN affiliate WJCL reports.

If the name was “so offensive’ then why did CNN spell it out?
Should have written Runaway N— Creek.
We have a mountain in Western Maryland called ‘Negro Mountain’. The name actually commemorates the heroism of a Black man. They’ve tried to change it a couple of times, but it’s never passed - even some Black historians objected:

So, Runaway Negro Creek is an affirmative name, rather than a negative one, but everything is equally offensive nowadays.
I’m SURE that the locals in the 19th century called it “Runaway Negro Creek.”
CNN is so offensive they only use initials.
Mostly that they claim to be “news”.
Anything to help fan the flames of racial division eh cnn? ;)
Outside of Austin, TX, there used to be a creek that was known as “N——r Creek”. It was named that because you followed it to find “N——r Cemetery”. Both were renamed decades ago.
The environ-MENTAL-ists will collude with the Left to ensure that Negro Mountain is the only mountain in Maryland that is strip-mined, so that there won’t be a Negro Mountain anymore.
Maybe they should complain to the Latinos and make them change the Spanish word for “black” from “negro”.
There was actually a controversy when Rick Perry was running for President, since a large rock on one of his properties was named “N****rhead Rock.” The name might have been changed since then.
Was it named by a KKK democrat?
I guess the original name could have been worse...
History: Named by Georgia Senate Resolution 685 in 2018 because the stream was reportedly used by enslaved people to escape to freedom.
It DOES show up under "Variant Names" as "Runaway Negro Creek." Feature Detail Report for: Freedom Creek
Down the memory hole with you, Runaway Negro Creek.
Blah blah blah
In the Latin based languages, everything black is “negro”. Are now to ban French, Spanish, Potugese and Italian being taught in our schools?
Big Media only published the article to preserve and protect the word “Freedom” in THIS context, lest future leftists associate it with the God-given freedom America has to purchase from time to time from peoples our domestic enemies represent.
