Illinois governor announces plan to legalize marijuana
Associated Press ^ | May 4, 2019 | Sara Burnett

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Saturday he’s reached an agreement with key lawmakers on a plan to legalize recreational marijuana in the state starting next year.

The legislation would allow adults 21 and older to legally buy cannabis for recreational use from licensed dispensaries. Illinois residents could possess up to about an ounce (30 grams) of marijuana, while non-residents could possess about half an ounce (15 grams).

The measure also would automatically expunge some marijuana convictions.

If it passes, Illinois would join 10 other states, including neighboring Michigan, in legalizing recreational marijuana. While the Illinois law would take effect Jan. 1, the first licenses for Illinois growers, processors and dispensaries wouldn’t be issued until May and July 2020, the governor’s office said.

Pritzker was joined by fellow Democratic lawmakers in Chicago to announce the deal, which comes after years of discussion among state legislators. They said the measure will be introduced Monday, kicking off debate at the Legislature, where Democrats hold a majority in both chambers. …

Well, THAT will help make the state more competitive for business.

The ONLY reason for legalizing it is to tax it. And my money is that it will be so expensive that it will have zero impact on the illegal trade. Might even increase it.

What is it with these governors wanting to legalize marijuana? Are they so hungry for tax dollars to squander (I notice it’s the more lib states wanting to do this) that they don’t care how the public will be endangered by drivers who are higher than a kite driving while under the influence and smashing into innocent peoples’ vehicles?

Anyone else suddenly come to the grim conclusion that cities and states run by Democrats are ignoring basic government needs and services?

This idiot Rat billionaire Governor (Funny how billionaire leftists don't get the same ire as Republican ones) isn't even tackling the budget or IL pension bombshell. All these Democrats are doing now is virtue-signaling, just kicking the can down the road until a Rat President happens so they can get a bail-out and start the process all over again.

there are laws against driving while incarcerated and hitting other people and objects. This people should go to jail. maybe the governors are tired of using law enforcement to go after pot heads.

The leftist theory is that if you have enough irresponsible and dependent to vote for you, then you have political power. But, if it works then society collapses so these politicians can be swarmed by the criminals.

Yeah, and dragging that steel jail cell would cause sparks which could ignite gas tanks.

Abso-freaking-lutely. Bonus: the citizens will be nice and mellow while they pay for their smart elders who got the hell out of there and now live on a super-fat pension in a low/no tax state.

I believe it’s called a jail break...but I know what you meant to write. I was in California as marijuana was about to be legalized. Lots of public service ads saying that driving while high was the same as a DUI. Don’t know how it’s worked out for them.

I have heard that the illegal (non-taxed) trade is still alive and well there.

Doubtful - people who before legalization didn't use because it was illegal, will after legalization not drive under the influence because it's illegal.

The ONLY reason for legalizing it is to tax it.

There's also the reason that it's nobody's business if an adult drinks alcohol or smokes pot.

Well, with pot, there isn’t any clear/legal definition of what “under the influence” is.

Writing as someone who was injured twice (avoiding serious injury only by luck) by someone doing one-hitters all day in a factory years ago who wasn’t following procedures, I think that this is an issue.
