Car collector's 'dirty little secret' discovered after death.

Dirty little secrets are rarely this big. An eclectic car, motorcycle and parts collection discovered after the May 2018 death of a Michigan man who had amassed it over the years is heading to the auction block.

According to VanDerBrink Auctions, Jeff Begg was an engineer who worked for Dana Corporation, founded several manufacturing companies of his own and fell under the spell of eBay when he was closing out his wife’s account following her passing in 2003.

“I guess renting an office for smut must qualify as a real dirty secret.”

Perhaps he used that as a tax deduction, too.

Strange inheritance has stories similar to this- only the collections are still in the family usually- people collect some odd but valuable collections sometimes

What a crock headline. Why was it a dirty little secret?
You have underground art collectors that buy illegal paintings only they will see.

This guy had plenty of money and collected things he liked, how is that any different than a collector or art or other things? It gave him pleasure and it was his money.

Nothing wrong with it at all. It was all his property and was not obtained by nefarious means.

There was a fellow in the South that made a fortune with sand and gravel pits, and collected steam locomotives in the 1940s and 50s as they were retired. He had dozens of them, actively used around his gravel pits, and they were a known attraction to train buffs.

Upon his death in 1961, his widow ignored offers to buy any or all of them (including a long-term-lease proposal from Southern, where her only involvement would have been cashing their monthly checks) and had them all scrapped.

Unless they’re talking about dirt/dust on the vehicles, I don’t fully understand the headline.

“Why sad? You can’t take it with you, so when’s a better time to spend it? Enjoy life, it’s all you’ll get. Dance as fast as you can.”

I agree! My daughter and only child died almost 10 years ago, and my husband died 6 years ago. I like to travel, so I am trying to go and do as much as I can, as long as I can. I am doing all I can that brings me joy. As my mother always said, “No one ever saw a Brinks truck follow a hearse to the cemetery.”

Sounds like every other episode of American Pickers.

Some people are connoisseurs, others are hoarders.

Advanced collectors can be real cheapskates because they’ve seen it all before. Looks like this guy was pretty unfocused in his collection and buying whatever popped up on ebay. Hope he enjoyed his big boy toys. RIP.

Put ‘em up on eBay myself with all the detailed collectors’ info and got three times what I figured they were worth. Haven’t looked back yet.

Good move. You happened to hit the sweet spot. Interesting items that appeals to folks with money. Collecting tastes change over time and I’ve seen people disappointed when they find out the current value of their antique spoon collection.

Pleasure, like health, wealth and knowledge, is one of the real goods necessary for happiness. For some, there is pleasure in collecting.Pleasure, like power or fame, is excessive if its acquisition prevents the attainment and acquisition of, or the sacrifice of the other real goods.

Oh yeah, I remember the Avon bottles, Beanie Babies and "Collector" plates among others.

Ever watch Mike Mezack and his "coin collecting" spiels? Items made to be collected as compared to old items that survived hard usage. That last is REAL collecting.

One of my kids borrowed some of his college money from us. He paid it all back this week along with a note that said now his inheritance is pure profit. :)

The Citroën Sm was the same car Burt Reynolds stole from his girlfriend in “The Longest Yard.” She kept screaming, “Bring back my #*&$!% Maserati!” but it was only a Maserati-engined Citroën.

Ford built the Cosworth DFV in cooperation with Lotus founder Colin Chapman. The engine block was a structural member of the chassis (the first for an F1 car). The front end bolted to a bulkhead behind the cockpit and the rear suspension bolted to the back. Lotus went on a tear with cars designed around the DFV and won the constructor’s championship four of the next six seasons after.

VanDerBrink Auctions, LLC is pleased to bring you the JAB Collection at auction. This amazing collection has a vital connection with its owner, engineering. Jeff Begg was intrigued with “works” of machines. The British Motorcycles and Formula 1 racing cars showed speed and wonderful engineering. This started a collection of “wonderful Engineering”, he noted. For Jeff this was his “dirty little secret” and most of his friends and family didn’t know he had accumulated this wonderful collection of fabulous engineering. When Jeff passed away, they found his collection. Now you will be able to see this wonderful collection of British Motorcycles, American and Import cars, Vintage Midget Race Cars and a hoard of speed equipment. The entire collection will be sold to the highest bidder. Plan now to bid and buy your piece of this amazing collection of engineering marvels.
