The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Made 10 qts sauce and 10 pkgs halved cherry tomatoes.
They're still growing like crazy.
Planted some Buttercrunch and Spinach yesterday since I only use the outside leaves. Zone 6.
Hey - first one in! Not a lot going on in the garden. Still have brussel sprouts we are waiting on, some peppers, swiss chard, squash and the Chinese long beans. Also letting some red and white romaine go to seed. Our wild garlic is blooming around our birdbath which always attracts a lot of honey bees. Too bad it’s so late in the season. I’ll take a pic.
I was going to brag about my pumpkin patch until I read about a guy in Alaska who grew a 2505 pound monster. I will be back later...
My squash, melons, and cucumbers are ripening slowly this year. My flour corn is growing well, but a lot of the ears have poor husk coverage. That’s an ongoing problem with this variety. I’ve been selecting against that trait, but this year I need ever ear I can get, so I’ve ordered some weatherproof pollination bags to slip over the ears and protect them where the husks failed. No idea if this will work, but its worth a shot.
Its almost time to start harvesting the meat chickens. I figure I’ll harvest 2 a week, since we don’t have a lot of freezer space. I’m saving 3 for replacement laying hens, and cycling out 2 of my older hens. That makes 13 for the freezer.
I got a little fountain for half price at the big lot store! It has a circulating water pump so it doesn’t need to be hooked up to water.
I can hear it gurgling right now through the window...so peaceful!
Garden stuff is cheap right now, as they need room for CHRISTMAS STUFF. LOL.
Most of my garlic is dug and curing.
Some still in the ground needs to ripen a bit more before I can dig it out.
I’ve been canning tomato sauce and have 11 quarts so far and am looking at probably another half dozen this weekend.

So on a pumpkin that big I wonder if the seeds are big as well. Dinner plate sized??

Still have at least 500 on the vine.
We just picked the last Myer Lemon from our minature tree until after about Thanksgiving.
The tasty and big lemons, bigger than a hard ball and just smaller than a soft ball has been producing lemons as fast as we could harvest and give away so many.
We now have at least a hundred a little bigger than a golf ball.. If we have a mild fall, it will spring into action with grown lemons about ThanksGiving.
Our minature Fig tree is figging out with anywhere from 6 newly ripe figs to a dozen per day. This will continue to about Halloween or the earliest heavy frost. Our yard man had to stake and tie up most brances a few weeks ago. They are so sweet, we don’t want any dessert during this time.
There is a family owned fruit and veggie stand with in a 5 minute drive. Their sweet corn, strawberries and peaches are in full production. They have many other great veggies and fruits in full bore until they close after Thanksgiving.
We have friends and our yard man, who raise the great big fuji persimmons. They drop off about a dozen per week at our back door when that season begins. They replace the tomatoes and go big from medum fall until the hard freezes come in early Dec. My wife uses them as dining table color until Thanksgiving. She takes them from decorating the dining table to the kitchen to become part of dinner.
Root veggies should be hitting the market next month into October.
Late summer and the fall in N. California is incredible with God’s bounty.
I have started cleaning up the raised beds. One is totally empty & last Sunday, I planted some zinnia seeds (a relative gave me some semi-dry heads she’d cut off of this year’s flowers). After letting the seed heads dry out a bit, they seemed to be ok (not mildewed, etc.). With warm soil & plenty of water (mostly rain showers this past week), I was pleasantly surprised to see little zinnias yesterday already! Now comes the race for blooms before the frost hits.
It’s always sort of sad to see the garden dying out .... I think that’s why I planted the late zinnias. I also planted some dinosaur kale in another bed so we’ll see how that does - seeds are a bit old so they may not come up.
The jalapenos did great this year. I’ve canned 3 batches of Jalapeno Pepper Jelly & have about 4 lbs more of beautiful red peppers to use up. I think I’m going to make some jalapeno poppers this weekend with some of the green ones.
We’ve got lots of goldfinches right now, feasting on a couple of sunflowers. I think I’m going to get a Nyger seed feeder for them because the sunflower seed heads will soon be bare. The goldfinches are a real joy to behold - like living sunshine with those gorgeous yellow feathers.
I just found the craziest zucchini recipe I think I’ve ever seen: https://commonsensehome.com/zucchini-gummy-candy/
I’m not able to try it right now, maybe next year. But if anyone else wants to try it, please let me know how it is!
One thing I learned by accident about tomatoes is I grew a bunch of them once, and my neighbors told me they would give me all the tomatoes I wanted since they grew so many.
So the next season I did nothing, and to my surprise some of the previous year's tomatoe plants reseeded, or grew to fruition in the second year.
I thought tomatoes were a one shot seasonal deal?- Tom
