Biden’s ‘record player’ just 1 of his vintage references
Associated Press ^ | September 15, 2019 | Thomas Beaumont and Michelle L. Price

Joe Biden’s suggestion that parents leave a record player on to teach their babies better vocabulary was a head-scratching (needle-scratching?) moment in Thursday’s debate.

But it was hardly the first time the 76-year-old Biden has busted out a vintage reference that reveals his age and leaves some in the audience in the dark.

Famous for his off-the-cuff storytelling, the former vice president regularly goes deep in the vault to pull out characters and events known primarily to a people of a certain age. Ever heard of Henry Carr? How about a Jerry can? […]

“Play the radio, make sure the television — excuse me, make sure you have the record player on at night, the — the — make sure that kids hear words.” This was part of Biden’s answer to a question about inequality in schools and what Americans can do to repair the legacy of slavery. He spoke about spending more money on the country’s poorest schools, giving teachers a raise and having social workers help parents. […]

“All of a sudden, ‘Along Came Jones,’ as that old song goes. Along came Trump,” Biden told a group of Democrats in Las Vegas in July. […]

“Along Came Jones,” was a 45 — a single — on the long-defunct ATCO label that barely charted after its release in 1959, when Biden was a sophomore in high school. He used it as a segue to the defining moment for voters today, the election of President Donald Trump. …

AP certainly believes that the dumbing-down of history has worked, as they get on board with the attacks on Biden.

BTW, Atco is not “long-defunct’, having its name changed to EastWest Records in 1996 (while still releasing records labeled “Atco”) and the Atco name revived in 2006.

They must’ve played Redd Foxx records over and over when he was asleep.

Biden 76, Warren 70, Sanders 78.

One can bet this sort of article attempting to take out Biden is coming from a snake like Harris or O’Rourke.

I wasn’t familiar with the song, but here it is:

I plopped down in my easy chair and turned on Channel 2
A bad gunslinger called Salty Sam was chasin’ poor Sweet Sue
He trapped her in the old sawmill and said with an evil laugh,
“If you don’t give me the deed to your ranch
I’ll saw you all in half!”
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He turned on the bandsaw (and then, and then!)

Refrain:
(And then along came Jones
Tall, thin Jones
Slow-walkin’ Jones
Slow-talkin’ Jones
Along came long, lean, lanky Jones)

Commercial came on, so I got up to get myself a snack
You should’ve seen what was goin’ on by the time that I got back
Down in the old abandoned mine, Sweet Sue was havin’ fits
That villain said, “give me the deed to your ranch
Or I’ll blow you all to bits!”
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He lit the fuse to the dynamite (and then, and then!)

(Refrain)

I got so bugged I turned it off and turned on another show
But there was the same old shoot-’em-up and the same old rodeo
Salty Sam was tryin’ to stuff Sweet Sue in a burlap sack
He said, “if you don’t give me the deed to your ranch
I’m gonna throw you on the railroad tracks!”
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He threw her on the railroad tracks (and then)
A train started comin’ (and then, and then!)

(Refrain)

Be nice. I’m old enough to remember the song. It was one of my favorites. I’m one of those who believes “the day the music died” was when buddy Holly was killed in a plane crash 🥴....

I hear it every so often on the local high school radio station, WFOS, 88.7, their motto is “Where else ?, as in where else are you going to hear this. They put the commercial radio stations to shame. They have classical music, blues, country, oldies. My only complaint is that they don’t have a stronger signal. Their program, the Blues Traffic Jam is fantastic, if you like blues music.

I know who Henry Carr is. But I'm an old guy like Biden.

Carr was a track star at Arizona State University when I was in school there.

In a box of school mementos, I have an autographed program by Henry from a track meet where he won the 220 meter on the curve.

He later went on to win the Olympic Gold for the 220 in 1964 and set an Olympic record with his time.

Only “victrola” is older than Joes refrence. HiFi came after, Walkman came after, CD player came after, ipod came after and ALL are long gone.

These references to the past seem like a new thing for him. I don’t recall him doing this when he was VP. He was fondling little girls then, but the cause of this might be a new malady.

He already survived two brain aneurysms. Who knows what’s going on with him healthwise now.

I think that’s “Gerry” cans; for the Germans.
And IIRC, The Coasters included ALONG CAME JONES in an album, among with YAKKITY-YAK, LOVE POTION #9, etc.

Sounds like you and Biden share a deep connection. So you are going to vote for him?
