How evolution builds genes from scratch
Nature ^ | 16 October 2019 | Adam Levy

In the depths of winter, water temperatures in the ice-covered Arctic Ocean can sink below zero. That’s cold enough to freeze many fish, but the conditions don’t trouble the cod. A protein in its blood and tissues binds to tiny ice crystals and stops them from growing.

The source is EXPLICITLY NOT in the list of banned sources: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1111944/posts

Is there a list of must be excerpted sources anywhere? It is very annoying to go through a long article line-by-line fixing HTML, removing text where images were in the source, and replacing them with actual images, putting foreign language quotes in italics, etc. to only then be told it's an 'excerpt only' or 'link only source'.

It was a bitch formatting the whole freaking article to post.

I made a POINT of making sure it wasn’t a banned source before I subjected myself to all that grief.

Fat lot of good it did me.

grrrrr!

Ah! You made it here in under an hour. I was expecting a response like that any time after the first 15 minutes.

For Zhang, research that links de novo genes to the human brain is tantalizing. “We know that what makes us human is our brains,” he says, “so there must be some genetic kit to push the evolution of our brain.”

We only utilize 2% of our brain so there must be some way to get to 100%. It made me think of ginkgo biloba and MK Ultra. Good post.

Thank you for posting this. Sorry about the wasted extra effort.

The article is typical naturalistic double-talk. ‘Evolution’ is fact. We well understand the mechanism of evolution and there exists much evidence for it. As it happens there is also much evidence that contradicts our primary mechanism but that evidence is explained by other mechanisms that we sort of sketch out in response to this confounding evidence as needed. Nonetheless, ‘evolution’ (whatever it is) is fact.

"Creating genes from non-coding regions could have some benefits over other gene-making methods, says Albà."

Clever of random chance to figure that out.

Lol.. genes from scratch. Nice fake science. Haven’t they heard... we the people are now educated.

Evolution does not predict anything, therefore it can claim credit for anything. It can never be shown to be false because of this.

A true scientist builds a model and trains it with data from nature, then he uses the model to predict what happens next. Usually using advanced math to transform the data into a domain that is more proximate to reason.

Evolution is for those who like magic thinking. Not for scientists.

Oh, and by the way, true science is never “settled”, it is always being extended and changed and improved. Those who like to say evolution is settled science are politicians, not scientists. However, they may wear a white lab coat and claim to be the oracles of science.

Did you read the article? Not from scratch, but from recycled (so called) junk DNA.

I read it a couple of times and the sense I get is that “de novo” actually means “ex aliquid”, from something. Just because they call something a junk gene does not mean it is a junk gene. Lots of things the scientists originally thought were evolutionary dead ends or leftovers were actually doing something quite important, i.e. the appendix. There are other studies showing those genes do have a purpose, and if “evolution” or “natural selection” changed them, the organism would not be able to function.

During a discussion with a friend, I was asked a question about evolution and neither of us had an answer. Maybe someone here could explain.

If evolution is a naturally occurring event, why don’t some DNA strands rotate in the opposite direction?

Bingo!

It may be junk to you and me, but the hoarder keeps it around and will occasionally go through a room of stuff looking for something that fits a need.

There’s a thought, every cell in our bodies, indeed every cell on earth, is a hoarder.

Small wonder I can’t clean the garage...

I think Asimov answered that.

Darned if I can cite the source off the top of my head, but it had something to do with circularly polarized cosmic rays coupling more efficiently to one direction of a helix and preferentially disrupting its function?

The Left Hand of the Electron, by Isaac Asimov, chapter 5, The Asymmetry of Life.

Beta particles when slowed down by passing through water emit left-circularly polarized gamma rays. That means D-amino acids are less easily formed and more easily destroyed.

That is absolutely false. It is an urban myth of sorts put forth in early 20th century.
Please stop repeating this nonsensical claim.

Evolution is an attempt by those who don’t believe in special creation by God to explain how and/or from where life came.
Creation itself (i.e., everything we can see, feel and sense) and everything by which we are ABLE to sense and detect the Universe is a testimony to God’s work of creation.
Nothing came from nothing, and nothing never could.
Evolution is just pixie dust, unicorn feathers and fairy tales. (Apologies to fairies.)

Just because they call something a junk gene

There is a theory that the so called junk dna is an incredible back up system. Genetic information is not lost.
