Energy companies turn to animal poo for clean power

In the search for clean electricity, power companies in Finland are going green by way of brown, and have set their sights on a previously untapped energy source: animal dung.

During this month's FEI World Cup showjumping qualifier at Helsinki International Horse Show, 100 tonnes of manure was loaded up and wheelbarrowed into two large containers before being carted away for incineration at the Järvenpää power plant.

The 150 megawatts of energy generated is enough to power the whole four-day show, with some left over to heat homes in the Finnish capital, according to energy company Fortum which launched its "Horse Power" initiative five years ago.

"There are so many horses in Finland and of course many more around the world, so it would be amazing if we could turn all that poo into energy," Fortum's Krista Hellgren told AFP.

The company claims that the manure produced daily by two horses can generate heat for a single family home for a year.

And just 200 millilitres' worth is enough to charge a phone.

Meanwhile, another power company has called for the public to send them their pets' doings.

Vantaan Energia's sticker and online campaign implores dog owners to "give poo a new life" by simply throwing it in the bin, from where it follows everyday refuse to a huge waste-to-energy incineration plant.

'The company claims that the manure produced daily by two horses can generate heat for a single family home for a year.'

Hell, we have five cats who download enough Tootsie Rolls daily to keep Helsinki's lights on for a month. How can an animal that small produce so much crap so fast?

Too bad all the animals will be dead because of the methane gas they release. Let’s watch this play out.

Commonly known as “fertilizer.”

What unintended consequences could possibly go wrong.

“Järvenpää power plant”

That was their plan all along. In English “Jar ven paa” means “Use we poo”.

I compost the grazing animal stuff and try not to step in the other.....

If it is self-sustaining and economically viable, I would be all for this, but I doubt it is. Biomass (the traditional kind) on the other hand seems to have more economic viability.

The downside of both is the loss of good soil.

More prophetic stuff from Jean Raspail in his Camp of the Saints. One of his unwashed characters on his way to invade (then) civilized Europe was the "Turd Eater." (He rolled turds into little briquettes for fuel.)

This is a prescient novel comparable in some ways to Rand's Atlas Shrugged. Every FReeper should be REREADING both of these books if he/she hasn't already.

I read a paperback on “home” power generation back in the late 1970s. This type of gas was mentioned, adapted from what farmers in India were doing at the time.

A neighbor had some hippie relatives living in the Adirondacks, and they used chicken poo as a source of methane to power one of their vehicles.

I once lived in a town that had a closed landfill. The methane gas was channeled to a handful of stacks (”flares”?) that simply burned it.

The waste company did a study on the energy content of the methane, and it was too poor to sell as is, BTU-wise, as well as too poor to economically run any electric power generation equipment.

These numbers reek of horse poo.

100 tonnes = 110 US tons. That’s 220,000 pounds of poop.

I just HAD to look it up...a 1000# horse will duece 50#/day. So it would take 4400 horses to plop 100 tonnes in a day. How many horses at this qualifier? How many days?

I don’t know what Finland’s road loading rules are, but here 55 tons (110,000#) in a container will have smokey knocking on your window. And that’s just net load! Legally only 80,000# gross allowed here. Permitting is another matter.

This smells.

“Did not the plains indians burn buffalo chips?”

I have read where pioneers in wagon trains, on much used routes, would fight over the buffalo chips and cow pies etc.

Too many people had already picked up all the wood.

The pioneers moving westward across the great plains used buffalo chips for fuel.

Much of the great plains had virtually no wood. Still today you can see thousands of limestone fence posts along the hiways in Kansas.
