Weekly Garden Thread - December 7-13, 2019
December 7, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 12/07/2019 6:42:01 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Good morning! Not much to talk about here. How’s the basil coming?

I am in awe of those who plant and cook so much wonderful and healthy food!

Reading the Weekly Garden Thread keeps me from doing bodily harm to myself. I get to live vicariously through those on this thread!

So a THANK YOU goes out to the Weekly Garden Thread provider and those who post!

I am interested in planting some of Hillary’s teeth in my garden and letting them sprout up to form my own army of evil skeletons.
Are any of hers available for sale, online? Thought I had some last month but they turned out to be pieces of her dentures that she ground into pieces after the 2016 election.
Put those in the ground and the only thing that popped up was an army of bureaucrats standing around with their hands out.

I know what you mean about living vicariously. Here in the frozen tundra of west Michigan, it is nourishing to read posts and see pictures from those in warmer climates.

I LOVE this picture! We're not feeding the birds yet, but it's really chilly this morning & I think it's time ... some mornings in the 20's coming up & the birds can fuel up early & quickly at the feeders after a cold night.

Another reason for waiting on the feeders ... we've been having large flocks of migrating red-winged blackbirds coming through. They mob the feeders & chase everything else away. I haven't seen any for a week at least so I think it's safe to put out food now.

Zero ... zip, zilch, nada going on in the garden. I have some cleanup to do, but it won't happen this weekend. We did manage to get new tires on Tuesday for the cart that I use to haul garden debris, mulch, etc. The tires were at least 20 years old & so dry rotten that one just collapsed. After ordering tires, our favorite car place got them mounted on the rims - amazing how much better that cart pulls when the tires are totally inflated!

Back to the birds .... here's my favorite cardinal pic - handsome fella. It's a little 'milky' because it was taken through a window. We have many cardinal pairs around here & after last summer's bluebird fledging fest, we have quite a few bluebirds, too - they're perching (& pooping, the rascals!) on my rain gauge just outside the back door. I haven't managed to get a picture of the bluebirds yet, but I'm trying!

One pic of the blackbird flock - it's a bunch of 'em!

It's very much the same out here in the deserts of Southern Arizona. Except it's 70°.

2020 seedlings are coming along nicely. I have started 3 new varieties of peppers but I am going to ditch 10 or more varieties I am currently growing. I want fewer plants in bigger pots.
If enough FReepers are interested in growing hot peppers I could mail a couple of hundred seeds to one person then others wanting seeds could send a SASE to that person. That would keep everybody’s costs down.

We had several big oak trees behind and above our house that were threatening, so the local wood choppers got some work.
Other than chain saws, the main tools were ropes, hooks and muscle...

Nothing going on in my garden in Upstate. But I did put the bottom of a celery stalk in water....and voila....I have celery. Have to transplant into dirt soon.

At least I know why our locals don't grow celery....it takes forever...and Aldi has it for 49 cents on occasion.

Things I freeze: Lemon slices, garlic, chopped celery, chicken soup and of course....sauce made with my homegrown tomatoes. I'm good till Spring!!

Good morning (or evening) have had your wife on my prayer list. I would pass on the hot pepper seeds but that is a great offer for those interested. I am more of a shishito/completely scraped and cleaned jalapeno/sweet banana/carmen type pepper person. I am trying to remember my favorite red pepper. Haven’t grown any for a few years. Could not find the plants anymore and my seeds got old. It’s red, sweet and horn shaped. The name has an R in it. Can’t believe I can’t remember it. I’m pretty sure it was a Bonnie plant but their website does not have it anymore. I think it was a south American variety. Oh well. Memory goes eventually.

That’s a lot of starlings! We stop feeding in late August as the red breasted grosbeaks and all their offspring are just hogs at the feeder. We start up again beginning of November. We start suet cakes in October and we have already gone through about 17. We usually use 3 cases of 12 but we plan on 4 cases this year. Heavy traffic. That’s a pretty good picture of a cardinal through a window. We have more than a few pairs and they stick around all winter.

Still no roots but the cuttings look happy and fresh and green!

I’m going to visit my Dad this morning, he’s about 50 minutes away, and will hit a few Thrift Shops to see if I can find the same ‘vase’ that you have.

My three Rosemary plants are doing well indoors - so far.

I’ve been amusing myself with making that lemony-kale pesto for Christmas gifts for a select few. I’m STILL harvesting kale from my garden - yikes!

Weather has been mild and no snow, but it’s going to get very cold next week and then it’s anyone’s guess what happens next!

The farmers have finally gotten the corn off, the stalks chopped and baled and some of the soybeans off - it’s been a rough season for them for sure. :(

That’s a great idea! Let me think on it. I am interested in that Jalapeno that’s all different colors on the one plant!

Help me with a mystery. I live in East Central North Carolina. Property has a pond and used to be rural, but now surrounded by houses. Have seen everything from foxes to deer to rats and even a beaver once. Last March, something was chewing on some trees we planted by the pond. I got some wire around them after I noticed, but what the heck could it have been?

I am more than half Yankee, so I suspected a beaver, but a local friend whose family has been here for generations asked me what is was. I told him if you don't know, I sure don't.

If you have any ideas, please let me know. The wire has stopped the problem but I expect to lose the first tree.

Click on the pictures to enlarge.
