Serial robbery suspect freed with no bail — then allegedly robs another bank
New York Post ^ | January 11, 2020 | Larry Celona, Ben Feuerherd and Ruth Weissmann

He’s laughing all the way to the next bank.

A John Dillinger wannabe is on the loose thanks to lax bail laws that set him free despite his arrest in connection to four Manhattan bank robberies.

Sprung on Thursday, he promptly robbed a fifth bank, in Brooklyn, on Friday, law enforcement sources told The Post.

So cops spent Saturday hunting once again for fugitive Gerod Woodberry, who allegedly pulled four heists at Chase banks in Chelsea, the Upper West Side and the West Village between Dec. 30 and Jan. 8.

Because Woodberry allegedly robbed using a note, rather than a gun, no New York jail can currently hold him, no matter how many times he strikes.

His alleged grand larcenies are classified as non-violent felonies. And under the bail reform law that took effect Jan. 1, most non-violent felonies — including bank robberies carried out without a weapon — are no longer bail eligible, meaning no judge can order him held pending trial.

Should cops pinch Woodberry on the fifth alleged heist, he’ll only be sprung again.

The insanity of the new law clearly wasn’t lost on the prime suspect.

“I can’t believe they let me out,” Woodberry marveled as he retrieved his vouchered property at One Police Plaza in lower Manhattan, sources told The Post. “What were they thinking?”

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea voiced his frustration after The Post broke Woodberry’s story online Saturday.

“What motivation does this suspect have to return to court? None,” Shea tweeted.

“This makes NYPD cops’ jobs harder, and makes New Yorkers less safe.”

"Because that's where the money is." Maybe Willie Sutton didn't really say it, but his spirit lives on...

“Once the banks start complaining, hopefully the politicians will listen and change the law,” the source said.

Don't count on it. Bribery and political graft are crimes, and where crimes are legal...

This sounds like a story from the Babylon Bee. Unfortunately it’s real.

As word gets out on the street about this, bank robbers will always use a note in New York, knowing that they won’t be held in jail.

This law, letting criminals committing about 90% of the categories of crime on the books walk right out of the police station without paying a dime of bail, is INSANE. There have already been cases, and the law only became effective January 1, 2020, of perps having committed serious crimes going right out and committing them again. The NYC populace is now a bunch of sitting ducks waiting for these pieces of garbage to prey on them at will, with nothing being done about it. Moreover, a SECOND insane law, becoming effective the same day as this disaster, lets criminals know the names of witnesses against them, effectively putting a target on the witnesses' backs. Who will want to report a crime if the criminal will then be told your name? This is how DumblASSio hope to decrease crime statistics---by having them not being reported. And then, with 90% of the criminals not up for jail time, he can then make a better case for closing the Rikers Island prison so his real estate developer masters can make a financial killing, while the people of NYC can experience an actual killing--of themselves--with all the criminals merely being sprung loose immediately, with no bail. I'm sure the imbecile strutting around in his masquerade as a city leader never figured that the cops would now have double, triple, and quadruple the work rounding up the same people over and over again, to no avail, as well as new criminals. That has to result in less protection for NYC residents.

The lesson to be learned here is ELECTIONS COUNT. Eighty percent of the people now being victimized stayed home sitting on their collective a@@es instead of making the effort to go out and vote for a decent candidate. That's how they ended up with DumblASSio, who is not fit to scrape dog poop off the streets, and the collection of mental cases making up the City Council and State Assembly. One of the members of the State Assembly, Speaker Carl Heastie (D), is much more interested in giving the "brothers" who commit most of the crimes more "equality" than he is in protecting the public. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie says he has no intention of modifying New York’s controversial criminal justice system overhaul, which has enraged prosecutors, police and some judges by nixing most bail requirements and forcing early production of evidence in cases. This fellow, a classic case of S for Brains, said, “We want safe communities but it is important to have a criminal justice system that treats everybody equally.” OK, so everyone has an equal chance NOT to commit crimes, Mr. Heastie, but blacks are committing a disproportionately large number of the crimes. That's a fact. So ALL criminal scum should be released, across the board, with no bail, so that your "brothers" can have more chances to injure, rob, or kill someone? That is the kind of mental giant NYS has in their State Assembly. Heastie's "sister" in the Assembly, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, is also concerned more with the justice system not coming down on blacks so much, so she suggested "tweaking" these horrendous new laws instead of getting rid of them all together, as any rational being would do. You can clearly see with this how libtardism leaves nothing but ruin in its wake.

Dems stop enforcing the laws.
Dems outlaw possession of firearms by law abiding people
Criminals run wild
Anarchy develops.
Dem-Socialists announce that they must introduce a police state to restore order.

The Democraptic-Socialist state is created.

Only a matter of time before this insane policy by the treasonists results in a death and when it does, I hope the victims family sues that city into bankruptcy, that’s if there’s any money left considering all the cash that absolute sick bastard DeBlasio gives to crooks.

Criminals have always gotten the short end of the stick, up until now.
I for one applaud the new respect NYC has for those who choose a life of crime.

In this spirit, I propose a new volunteer group, made up of citizens and members of the business community, who will wait outside of police stations, meet up with recently released inmates, and welcome them back into the community.

So here's a question. Does he still get free bail if the stolen cash isn't recovered? He hit five banks, couple thousand each. Leaves the $$ with a friend, and that money is never recovered and he/no one is ever held responsible for it?

I believe the no-bail law is a state law passed by the democrat-controlled legislature and signed by the democrat governor.
