NAME CHANGE: How 'Michael' King Jr. became Martin Luther King Jr.
Washington Post ^ | Jan 2019 | DeNeen Brown

Martin Luther King Jr. was born Jan.15, 1929.

But the name on his original birth certificate — filed April 12, 1934, five years after King was born — was not Martin. Nor was it Luther. In fact, for the first years of his life, he was Michael King. And it wasn’t until he was 28 that, on July 23, 1957, his birth certificate was revised.

The name Michael was crossed out, next to which someone printed carefully in black ink: “Martin Luther, Jr.”

The story of how Michael became Martin began in 1934 when King’s father, who then was known as the Rev. Michael King or M.L. King, was senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church and a prominent minister in Atlanta. In the summer of 1934, King’s church sent him on a whirlwind trip. He traveled to Rome, Tunisia, Egypt, Jerusalem and Bethlehem before setting sail to Berlin...

King arrived in Berlin a year after Adolf Hitler became chancellor. During his trip, the senior King toured the country where, in 1517, the German monk and theologian Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg castle church, challenging the Catholic Church. The act would lead to the Protestant Reformation, the revolution that would split Western Christianity.

All around him in Berlin, King Sr. was seeing the rise of Nazi Germany. The Baptist alliance responded to that hatred with a resolution deploring “all racial animosity, and every form of oppression or unfair discrimination toward the Jews, toward coloured people, or toward subject races in any part of the world.”

When the senior King returned home in August 1934, he was a different man, said Clayborne Carson, director of the King Institute. It was sometime in this year that he changed his name and changed his son’s name, too...

And if...the Almighty said to me, "Martin Luther King, which age would you like to live in?"

....I would go on, even to the great heyday of the Roman Empire. And I would see developments around there, through various emperors and leaders. But I wouldn't stop there.

I would even come up to the day of the Renaissance, and get a quick picture of all that the Renaissance did for the cultural and aesthetic life of man. But I wouldn't stop there.

I would even go by the way that the man for whom I am named had his habitat. And I would watch Martin Luther as he tacked his ninety-five theses on the door at the church of Wittenberg...

But I wouldn't stop there...

- Martin Luther King Jr. "I've Been to the Mountaintop" (April 3, 1968)

I’m shocked that this is even in the WaPo.

Ralph Abernathy has stated that the night before he was killed, King and he were “entertaining” 2 white prostitutes in their hotel room.

I never knew this until very recently, when my Pastor told us. I was so surprised, and surprised I had never known.

Good piece, largely avoids tendentiousness, which is refreshing to see in the WaPo. I never knew MLK Jr. said those words right before his death, either. RIP.

Thanks for posting this!

When I was a kid, some relatives spoke of seeing a sort of billboard down south showing the original names of both. Had forgotten the story. Thanks CondoleezzaProtege.

Lest we forget, MLK was a communist who, along with his admirable civil rights leadership, wanted to destroy the tenets of our Constitutional Republic.

Yes, King was a communist. He was subjected to surveillance by J. Edgar Hoover because of his communist associations, and his secret funding sources. That’s number One.

Number 2: is that King was also surveilled/wiretapped and his rooms were bugged, actively, under orders of JFK and Robert Kennedy (the president’s nepotistic appointed Attorney General, was his own brother- never, ever should have happened). RFK continued the spying on King, and provided the summaries and results to LBJ— who was even more manipulative on the “black vote”.

More proof of just how disingenuous the demonrat party (which to this day says JFK was a “saint”— he wasn’t he was a rich drug addicted, sex addicted brat son of Irish Boston Mafia. And Robert- was a true creep of a person, and naturally LBJ hated both of them— from a Texas “religious” point of view, but mostly from one of the different “Gangs” within the dem party. Gangs that are still present. Never forget that the “catholic” kennedy dynasty, Teddy in particular, sponsored obamaumao (an obvious avowed Marxist and liberation theology communist) over any other candidate for president. Just as Teddy hated Jimmah Cahtah (which, aside from Cahtah’s idiocy on human nature and his hatred of Israel) and Cahtah hated Teddy, since he had to pay off Teddy’s campaign debts (as if Teddy couldn’t have done so on his own), so Cahtah’s name could be placed as the Candidate of the DNC. Lovely group of thugs, demonrats are— to the core, ugly people. Mobsters love them.
