What is masculinity and its purpose if not for physically protecting the family?

Protecting your own family is an obligation. Definitely your children , for sure. I would argue that a wife has obligation to protect herself, as well. But giving up a seat in a lifeboat for a complete stranger simply because said stranger has a vagina and I don’t. Nope! My life is not worth less than someone else’s. Neither is my son’s.

Personally, I respect the old notions of chivalry and saving the women and children first. I wouldn’t be taking space away from a child. I couldn’t live with that.

However, I wouldn’t be singing while the ship went down either. It might be complete futility, but in my opinion ‘real men’ would be looking for the tool lockup, gathering together the large tables from the dinning hall as well as other larger furnishing or removable sections of the ship, and cobbling together makeshift flotation rafts.
It’s not noble nor is it stoicism to embrace your fate passively.
