A Detroit man is suing a Michigan bank for refusing to cash a settlement check awarded to him in a racial discrimination lawsuit, according to a report.

Sauntore Thomas, 44, claims TCF Bank employees refused to cash or deposit his settlement check on Tuesday at a branch in Livonia, leading cops to respond and a fraud investigation to be launched, the Detroit Free Press reports.

“ Thomas, who is suing for unspecified damages, was not arrested or charged during Tuesday’s visit to TCF Bank, where its computer system read his check as fraudulent, according to police.”

So the computer discriminated against him?

Yeah. Either they are idiots at that bank, or we’re not getting the whole story. Usually a bank will happily deposit a check, for any amount. But if it is large enough, they won’t allow you to withdraw the money until the check clears.

That’s how those nigerian scams work. You cash their big check and take “some” of it out to pay them back, except after about a week to ten days, it’s proven to be fake, and the bank “undoes” the deposit and you’re stuck with the bill.

It’s not about race. It’s about how banks deal with larch checks. Also, if you don’t have an account there, fuggetaboutit.

The guy wanted $13,000 in cash that day. The bank said he could have his money in 3 days, and he had a cow. The bank went out of their way trying to find anyone at Enterprise to confirm that the checks were legitimate and he couldn’t point them to anyone. Anyone who has seen “Catch Me If You Can” knows this whole deal looks just like a check fraud scheme and the bank had to take the position they did. And, because he was being disruptive, they ended up calling the police or face other problems trying to “handle it themselves.”

This is BS and it should be tossed. The guy created his own problems and as he was just rewarded for doing this by Enterprise, its pretty easy to see why.

Did he throw a chair at the teller, like they do at McDonald’s?

Have to wonder just how many discrimination lawsuits he’s had and how many payouts he’s received

Most banks....if you were handing them a check like this ($13k)...they might have agreed to hand $130 (if you were a long-term client) and told you to come back in 72 hours.

I can remember back in the 1980s....some US bank I was dealing with...telling me I had ten days before I could touch my money.

Larch check? Oh...wasn't that an old Monty Python sketch?

I assume this was an auto-correct thing but it is still funny in its truthfulness!

Many of "their" upbringings are actually destructive.

None of the comments I am reading here in defense of the bank are in the article. The claim is that they would not even deposit his check.

My first reaction is that the guy also needs counseling on how to invest and save for the future, but it sounds like $13K is a fraction of the total settlement and he wanted it to buy a 2004 Durango, showing the guy is hardly inclined to be a spendthrift. I have no knowledge of the quality and value of the pickup that he was purchasing, but if that is what he wants, it is not my job to question his decision.

Can’t argue with that.

My belief is that we are not getting the whole story. If the bank did what the article suggests, and there are no other relevant facts, then the folks at the bank are morons.

I just find that hard to believe, and I’ve learned time and time again that if that is the case, we are probably not hearing some key information.

Yep, he’s milking his race card cash cow.

“...to cash a settlement check awarded to him in a racial discrimination lawsuit...”

The guy wanted $13,000 in cash that day.

I knew there had to be a real reason why this whole thing started.

If the guy had been a customer of the bank and had a balance {before deposits of new checks} he would have been given that amount.

No bank is going to let you walk in off the street and want to cash a check, {for any amount} if it isn't covered.

There is so much fraud today, that banks must have a grace period just to cover themselves.

This black guy just got a payoff for skin color, and is now trying to run the same scam again {and will do it until it no longer pays off}.

I think we’re just not getting all the information. Bank personnel are very well trained these days and any cashier that has doubts would turn to the Bank Manager/Expert in the house.
