Windows 10 Warning: Anger At Microsoft Rises With Serious New Failure
Forbes ^ | Feb 6, 2020 | Gordon Kelly

Windows 10 may now be essential but users new and old have had a rough ride in recent weeks. And it has just gotten a lot worse after a new, high-profile Windows 10 failure has left more questions than answers and some seriously angry users.

The drama began yesterday [2/5] as Windows 10 users suddenly found that Search was broken with a black bar showing where search results should be, even for those who tried to perform a local search of their files. Breaking with tradition (1,2,3,4,5), Microsoft was fast to act blaming “a temporary server-side issue”. But the explanation instead kicked a hornet’s nest. First, the fix doesn’t work for everyone. Second, and more worryingly, Microsoft’s explanation doesn’t add up and it has prompted serious questions to be asked about how the operating system works and what personal data it is sharing.

Popular Microsoft pundit Woody Leonard led the charge, writing: “If you believe that yesterday’s worldwide crash of Windows 10 Search was caused by a bad third-party fiber provider, I have a bridge to sell you.”

In an open letter to new Windows head Panos Panay, Susan ‘Patch Lady’ Bradley was similarly sceptical, noting that today “we all found out that our local search boxes are somehow dependent on some service working at Microsoft.” She attacked the company for a lack of transparency and gave it a maximum ‘Pinocchio score’ for a lack of trust.

“Microsoft has been working to unify search experience across Windows, Bing, and Office 365 products...Microsoft’s efforts to supercharge the search box has many advantages, but such problems are ruining the company’s reputation,” said Windows Latest, in a stark warning.

Search Broken? ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

I’m posting this to help anyone who was wondering what the heck happened to Search. Not meant to be a Win/MS bash thread, but a helpful one. Share your experience with the problem, but let’s try to keep it on topic. :-)

This doesn’t include the network bug that just appeared where Office documents can become truncated on saving them if the network fails. At work, I have had several documents become truncated, losing all content because my employer blocks Microsoft’s “phone home” of Office document metadata.

Microsoft is for all practical purposes an Indian company now, and Indians have zero morals or ethics.

Unfortunately, my last Windows machine bit the dust, and I am left only with Linux for now.

“and just wait it out”

That in it’s self is a failed concept to have to deal with in the first place.

So the search feature was making 3rd party calls by default and no one was picking up the phone?

I have Windows 10 but never use Bing, only Chrome. Is that what was broken? I haven’t noticed anything wrong yet.

On topic. MSFT and APPLE are converting all desk/lap top PC’s to the ANDROID/IOS format. This will discourage PC users and eventually no one will even have a PC.

It costs them money to make the interface between websites and PC’s AND the interface between websites and SMART MOBILE DEVICES (phones) reformat themselves to match the device.

I don;t know why they are still called phones. OF all the things our smart devices do, the phone part of it is really crappy. AND the reason for that is they wanted to save money. My old cell phone , with only an LCD display, had full duplex conversation ability. New phones (at least mine) don’t. It sucks.

I refuse to upgrade to 10, so when this dies, and it will be soon, I’m wondering what folks know about an Apple Mac? I know they’re expensive, but I’m ok with that as long as it’s a simple platform. Thoughts?

I bought a new W-10 Desktop computer and then updated my old computer from W-7 to W-10.

What I have noticed is that I cannot set MS Word to “Auto Save”. It gives some message like “Save your document to the Cloud” Or “To One Drive” and “we will save it for you.” I will save it locally, thank you. (PITA!)

Microsoft needs to start asking people what they want rather than forcing things they think we ‘need’... Of course Microsoft is run by liberals so the ‘bully’ the little people comes naturally to them.
