'They're not gonna let up': Democratic strategist predicts Trump popularity surge with black voters in 2020

A Democratic strategist listed off a series of accomplishments President Trump has achieved that will help him with African American voters.

"I'm gonna send this flag up so the Democratic Party — people need to understand this," Jamal Simmons, a political analyst for CBS News, said Sunday on Face The Nation. "We talked to Terrance Woodbury, who's a young African American pollster. He has been saying for months that President Trump has been going very hard at African American men."

Simmons, who worked on campaigns for Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, cited Trump's public friendship with celebrity power couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, the extradition of rapper A$AP Rocky from Sweden, and an uptick in federal money given to Historically Black Colleges and Universities as factors that might lead to an increase in the president's popularity among young, black voters.

"They're not gonna let up," he said.

Trump got 8% of the black vote in the 2016 general election.

During his State of the Union speech Tuesday, Trump touted a strong economy and low unemployment numbers, specifically among African Americans.

"The unemployment rate is the lowest in over half a century," Trump claimed. "And very incredibly, the average unemployment rate under my administration is lower than any administration in the history of our country. If we hadn’t reversed the failed economic policies of the previous administration, the world would not now be witnessing this great economic success."

Cameras caught many Democrats sitting and scowling during these remarks.

Not exactly news. We all know Trump is going to do better with the black vote than he did in 2016(which was 8%).

The dems are just now catching up.

The smart ones can look around and see for themselves that everyone is doing better.

Sadly, some will choose to remain on the plantation as it is the only thing they know.

Smart move. The women with a very few notable exceptions are a total lost cause just irredeemable.

The dems are just now catching up.

The dems are just now realizing they have done nothing but hate Trump for 3 years and have no achievement or policy position to tout or be proud of. They have been so consumed that this election business has snuck up on them and they realize, suddenly, Trump is more popular than ever through it all. Impeachment was a hail mary. It ended up being another turnover for the dems.

Who will be our next Trump in about 5 years? Pence? We should start thinking about that. Who is the next "non-politician" that can run the nation as boldly and conservatively as Trump has?

Yep. With 3 or 4 generations having Uncle Sam as their husband, they aren't leaving the plantation.

In five years, the GOP candidate should be named Donald Trump.

That’s okay; the dems have illegal aliens, voter fraud, ballot harvesting, endless recounts and James Comey.

Good leaders are good businessmen not good politicians

Though Trump nails both catagories

Cotton is Hugh Hewitt’s favorite, which pretty much disqualifies him in my opinion.

NO NO NO NO NO!

NO MORE family legacies. Look how well the Bush family did for the nation.

No, just no.

In five four years, the GOP candidate should be named Donald Trump.
The vice president is the political heir of the president. That is his role.

Mike Pence has good credentials, to include a stint as a talk radio host, will be about 65 yo in ’24, and is a former governor who attained national office within four years of attaining statewide office.

Only two sitting VPs have been elected POTUS since the passage of the 12th Amendment - van Buren (Jackson’s VP), and GHWB. If Trump were to continue his success until ’24, tho, Pence will be on the GOP short list for certain.

The Bushes were bad long before Jeb, or W, or 41.

Not picking Kemp was Reagan’s biggest mistake.

Very interesting thread. Is this the real reason?

In today’s world though you need a bare knuckled fighter like Donald Trump to prevail against the Democrats. I think that Pence has been the conservative policy implementation machine behind Trump while Trump keeps liberals off-balance and conservatives fired up. A street fighter like Gaetz or Jordan as prez and Pence again as veep might be the way to go. I don’t believe that there are term limits on VPs.

I think the Dems response to Trump’s growing popularity with blacks is that their VP running mate will no doubt be black to keep their most important voting constituency in the fold. My guess is Coupe Deval Patrick, former governor of Mass who has been selling himself as a “moderate” of late. A Buttigieg-Booker ticket might be all gay all the time campaign fun but unfortunately for Booker. gay is an asset only in white Dem circles not black circles
