Woman in Viral Airplane Seat Reclining Controversy Now Looking To Sue American Airlines: Report

One woman’s video of the airline passenger behind her punching the back of her reclined seat went viral last week.

Now she is reportedly looking to sue American Airlines.

The controversy began when Wendi Williams posted a video on Twitter of the passenger behind her shaking her headrest with repeated punches on her Jan. 31 American Eagle flight from New Orleans to Charlotte, North Carolina.

The man behind her was in the last row and reportedly asked the woman to sit upright so he could eat.

She did, but then later reclined again, and the situation escalated as was shown in the video that was recorded, according to Fox Business.

Williams originally tweeted, “I will be calling the FBI to press charges against the ‘man’ who mistook me for a punching bag. Anyone who doesn’t like it, I don’t care!”

According to Williams’ account of the situation, a flight attendant came over but instead of stopping the man, she offered him a complimentary cocktail.

The more space between seat then less passengers fly. The Airlines need to raise tickets.. The man was totally disrespectful!!! What a creep he was!

She invades his limited personal space with her seat, and she is the aggrieved party?

So then, her row can't recline, sure. Got it. Then, of course, the next row in front of her can't recline. And the next, and the next. So, no one can recline at all? Or this woman just has to suck it up? That's ridiculous. If you're the poor schmuck who gets stuck in a seat that won't recline, that doesn't mean every single person on the plane has to share your discomfort. Airline seats recline, period. If some airlines want to disable recline on ALL seats, that's fine too.

A few years ago, I had a flight where my "reclining" seat wouldn't recline. After a few tries, I got up and looked at the back of my seat, and sure enough, the millennial behind me had inserted clips that prevented my seat from reclining. You can buy such devices online. Of course, the idiot's seat WAS reclined. After a brief and direct conversation, he removed his silly devices.

Good for her. Sue them and win big. Airlines need to respect and protect passengers.

I once fly from Anchorage to Denver in a seat like that at the rear bulkhead that did not recline. It was hell. I would never do it again. The seats like that should be forbidden.

Men in particular are really penalized for their size in coach seating - I'm no linebacker but my shoulders are wider than a coach seat and I will be rubbing shoulders with the person next to me. I'm 5'10, which means there's zero possibility for me to cross my legs or curl them up in a seat the way a woman does. If the person in front of me chooses to recline their seat all the way back, I can't even put the tray table down and lean my head on it in misery. I've never gone ape like this guy - the person in front of me has a right to push their shiny recline button - but I can understand why he was pushed past the brink.

The fault is entirely that of the airlines - they make coach seating too small to be bearable, especially for men. They also provide recline buttons so that suffering passengers in coach can be made to suffer a bit more by the person in front of them. If women were imposed upon the way airlines impose upon men, we'd never hear the end of it.

I have been traveling around Europe this winter, by train or bus when possible, city center to city center, no waits, no taxi or shuttle, walk up to the window buy a $25 ticket v airlines at $85 + luggage fees. Have to fly back to the states in a couple of weeks, not looking forward to that 14 hours

It's a slightly more than two hour flight on one of those commuter sized American Eagle planes. I think they hold about 66 passengers and it is like being in a bus.

I was subjected to torture on one of those flights a while back - last row like the gentleman mentioned but on the other side of the plane with the rest room behind us. Every time someone closed the rest room door we felt a large jolt in those seats.

On the return flight, front row (no first class - remember little plane) and after a four hour delay (mechanical problem with plane and had to get a replacement from Lord knows where) the flight itself was uneventful but I will never fly AA again.

Worst flight I had was when there was such a back log moving people and delays we ended up in a cargo plane! You couldn’t hear yourself think it was soooo loud! then a two hour taxi ride thereafter!

If a person is 6-foot or taller, there is not enough room. My vote is with the fella getting his kneecaps crushed.

Those non-reclining seats should be priced much cheaper and let the market decide if the body fits or has the tolerance for pain.

Worst flight I had was a 14 hour jaunt from Diego Garcia to Clark Air Base in the PI on a C-130. Freezing cargo bay, jump seats and not even a boxed lunch.

I found myself in this EXACT rear bulkhead seat situation on a Canadair regional mini jet once.

I (and others)consider me mostly sane, and a seasoned and relaxed traveller. But I eventually lost it to the mental torture of the physical discomfort.

That last row seat does not have the normal non-reclined seat back angle of the rest of the seats to start with - you are sitting bolt upright. Add to that the heat radiating from the mechanicals behind the bulkhead, and the fact that the cabin AC doesn’t much affect the rear parts of the cabin.

When that next-to-last row seat gets reclined, the person (me)in the last row seat can put your thumb on your forehead and fan out your fingers and your pinky will be touching the seat back of the inconsiderate recliner traveler - there is a seat back literally in your face.

In my experience, i dealt with for a while, trying to take my mind somewhere else. I eventually lashed out, verbally and a punch or 3 to the seat back. Definitely not a normal thing for me. And I wasn’t drinking.

Bottom line, be considerate of others with your desire to recline your seat. And NEVER find yourself confined to the torture of that rear bulkhead seat, especially on regional jets which are small to start with for bigger guys. That last seat is unsat for all but kid-sized folk.

There are zero routes from Europe to the United states that last 14 hours.

"She invades his limited personal space with her seat, and she is the aggrieved party?"

That was her space. She paid for a reclining seat.

She invades his limited personal space...

If airlines sell you a reclining seat then it stands to reason, you are allowed to use that feature unless directed by the pilot/stewardess to place the seat in an upright position, e.g., for take off and landing. The woman paid of a seat that reclines. She has every right to use/recline her seat. I can understand why she is suing.

I'm well over six foot, and normally I insist on the emergency exit seat (I haven't flown in well over ten years though - f*** the TSA, the crummy airlines and all that) but usually I don't even have to request it - the ticket agent takes one look at me and says "I'm going to put you in the emergency exit seat."

Well, one trip, I wasn't able to get any such seat. I got stuck in a mid-row coach seat, and as soon as we took off, some 20-something kid in the seat in front of me reclined his seat - or tried to, as it turned out, because his seat went back maybe an inch before it made contact with my knees. Well, this dumbass was convinced that the reason his seat wouldn't recline further was because it was stuck somehow, so he begins to THROW HIS BODY AGAINST HIS SEAT in an effort to get it to go back further. I didn't know whether to laugh or snap his neck. After a few of his tries, I said, "Hey!' and he looked over at me all shocked. I said "It's not stuck. That's as far back as that seat is going. OK?" And he just sat down and that was that.

As for me, I never recline my seat, I suppose because I understand precisely how annoying it is to have that seat come into your space, but also because the shallow angle of recline doesn't make it worth the imposition on the poor bastard behind you. But I also tend to live by the Gold Rule, so...

Actually, way back in the early days of commercial flight, some companies had sleeper berths for transatlantic flights.

As far as sleeper berths now Airbus is working on it. But the sleepers will be in the hold area.

As nutty as certain kinds of voters get these days, the young man is lucky he didn’t end up with a Diet Pepsi Shampoo and a Budweiser Creme Rinse. This would make a funny script for a TV show. What if that were Michelle Obama in the front seat?
Now THAT would be hilarious and scary all at once.
