Woman in Viral Airplane Seat Reclining Controversy Now Looking To Sue American Airlines: Report

One woman’s video of the airline passenger behind her punching the back of her reclined seat went viral last week.

Now she is reportedly looking to sue American Airlines.

The controversy began when Wendi Williams posted a video on Twitter of the passenger behind her shaking her headrest with repeated punches on her Jan. 31 American Eagle flight from New Orleans to Charlotte, North Carolina.

The man behind her was in the last row and reportedly asked the woman to sit upright so he could eat.

She did, but then later reclined again, and the situation escalated as was shown in the video that was recorded, according to Fox Business.

Williams originally tweeted, “I will be calling the FBI to press charges against the ‘man’ who mistook me for a punching bag. Anyone who doesn’t like it, I don’t care!”

According to Williams’ account of the situation, a flight attendant came over but instead of stopping the man, she offered him a complimentary cocktail.

Yeah but, when you were done, at least you were at Clark AFB. Love it there.

If I had a billion dollars to throw away, I’d start an airline where all passengers would be encouraged to sleep through the flight.

Reminds me of the SciFi movie "Fifth Element" in an early scene where passengers boarding a starliner, are placed in sleeping berths, and knocked out for the duration of the flight.

“Kinda like backing into a parked car, then suing the owner for parking in their assigned space”

Wrong.

As for me, I never recline my seat, I suppose because I understand precisely how annoying it is to have that seat come into your space, but also because the shallow angle of recline doesn't make it worth the imposition on the poor bastard behind you.

Exactly, same here - the tiny amount of recline I get by pushing back my seat isn't worth the annoyance I cause the person behind me. I know how big an imposition it is when the doofus in front of me just has to push his/her seat back - I never do it to the person behind me.

Airlines should remove the recline button. They should also widen seats and improve leg room - I know ticket prices will increase, but is it going to take major violence in some air-rage incident or someone having a heart attack due to the over-crowding before airlines realize what they're doing is unhealthy and dangerous?

Ellen Degeneres did the reclining joke.

Way before she got crazy popular. And when she was still in the closet.

Oh, the good ole days.

Agree 100%

Further, the FAA should consider this as a safety issue and mandate a minimum space between the rear seat’s front edge and the front seats most rearward position. At current distances, it is not POSSIBLE to leave your seat if someone has reclined into your space.

I go Paris to San Diego, non stop to LA is 12+ but about 50% more and then I need to get down to San Diego, a two hour drive. I would dearly appreciate to see a shorter flight if you can help me out.

this has been a trip of a lifetime and worked into everything I had hoped for. Wet cold storms in Amsterdam today, the museum was 5 minute walk and spent 3 hours there.

If we aren’t supposed to recline our seats then why would they design them to recline?

I vote for the woman, here.

Lol, wrong. I do actually fly a lot. About 300,000 miles a year. You? I’m a pilot for a major US airline. And again there are no flights from Paris to San Diego that take 15 hours. What you’re thinking is total travel time including Connections.

Please show me a flight from Paris to San Diego under 14 hours. I have been doing that and the SF to Paris route for 25 years. You say there is NO 14 hour flight from Europe that will get me to San Diego, show me one.

That's actually not a bad idea. Charge less for the non-reclining seats and you'll have people volunteering to take them in order to save money. Throw in a complimentary cocktail or two and suddenly having the back of somebody's seat in your lap becomes even more tolerable.

That said, the actions of the passenger drumming and punching the back of the seat is the kind of selfish, self-absorbed behavior you see with Leftists everywhere. And I'm thinking the reclining passenger was a Leftist as well. Conservatives would have worked out the situation without resorting to childish behavior.

The back seats don’t recline. If you want reclining seats, don’t take the back seats. If that is all that is left, take another flight.

I see not reason to remove 5-6 seats from the available pool of seats, just because some people don’t like them.

They should be listed as non-reclining on the web site, so people who rarely travel would know this.

I often sit in the back row, because nobody wants to, so you are more likely to have a free seat next to you, plus you are close to the peanuts, or whatever it is they feed you these days.
