The mass of the Chinese people are held in thrall by an efficient system of hourly checks unimagined by George Orwell in 1984.
But how does the CCP monitor their foreign-agent students in the U.S.?
Saddam Hussein's state security engaged about 60% of the populace spying on the other 40% and each other, high-quality human intelligence unable to be easily worked-around like electronic intelligence, but also so high-maintenance it must have been a drag on the economy.
China's reliance on public, closed-circuit cctv and regular cell-phone loyalty check apps could have once been beaten, but the Sino-Orwellian future is grim for the citizens at home and for foreign-students alike.

Even the wall-tv in "Linda's" Fahrenheit 451 parlor (Julie Christie) required her to be summoned by a little, tinkling bell, to attend mass-conditioning sessions.
Wall-tvs in George Orwell's 1984 required a mass corps of the EngSoc equivalent of China's "block grannies" to evaluate comrades' compliance with group conformity. But the State left some gray areas on the margins of the tvs, so Winston Smith could at least imagine he had some secrets.

China will likely continue as the world leader in detecting peoples' avoidance, cheating measures, using sophisticated computer algorithms unimagined in the West.
There must be a much more intrusive level of surveillance of Chinese students in America. And like the products of the Soviet spetznats, spy-saboteur academies, where talking in one's sleep would be grounds for expulsion, today's Chinese students in America must at once be subject to an even closer intensity of surveillance than home-bound citizenry. But they must also be conditioned not to reveal to Americans, their loyalties to the CCP.
Spetsnovets Academy Cadets
Could you tell if a Chinese student was a dedicated, CCP fanatic, simply by asking one, "What do you think of President Xi Jinping?"
You would have to anticipate one answer for an American, another answer for the authorities at home.
But would the student be able to keep it all straight?
Maybe they'll get their bearings straight from American political apologists for the CCP.
Shouldn’t the question be how is OUR Government Monitoring them?
Then again, the homegrown Commies our College’s are churning out are probably more dangerous.
Is LA Mayor Eric Garcetti a Chinese Communist. He is offering Rewards for People to turn in their Friends and Neighbors who run a Business on the Non Essential List.
More important is how ae we tracking what they are doing?
When I was at college in the mid-70s, I knew a LOT of Persian students (aka “Iranian”).
The Shah kept an agent of “Savak” or two at every college and loyal students could rat out others to the agent(s), but no one really knew who they were so they were all pretty tight-lipped.
They lived in constant fear of misspeaking, and being disappeared, which DID happen.
One Saturday night you were partying with Farhad, on Monday someone would say “hey, where’s Farhad?” to which there was, typically, no answer.
Pretty strange question. Easy answer.
Google/Alphabet, Facebook, Twitter, all the Presidents enemies.
Simple... The DNC gets chicom funding that allows them to monitor, support, and register these students to get welfare, drivers licenses, and to vote...
Hard to believe we didn’t see this 30 years ago when Trump spoke out on it. Their system won’t adjust when the SHTF. They’ll invade Taiwan in response. Just like the Falklands fiasco w/Argentina.
Deport them yesterday. Nuke the wet markets and tell the Chicoms to forgive our debt or they get wiped off the planet. Any more questions?

Their cellphones are monitored and they “call home” regularly. If they have family in China then they are sending back every scrap of information they can find.
They all use WeChat. Think Facebook x 100.
The universities have been overrun with Chinese Nationals.
Gee, I wonder how that happened?
Most of the Chinese who come here are delighted to be here. Few ever entertain thoughts of returning home.
My openly vocal hate for the CCP, military past, and long history in China makes me more likely for monitoring by the ChiComs than most Chinese immigrants.
Most Chinese immigrants here are very apolitical, but those who still defend the CCP are a definite threat. There should not be ANY PhD or STEM research going on in any US University or corporations by any Chinese nationals at this point.
Lets take a reality break.
I agree there are some here to spy but a good bit of that big number are high school kids. We have sponsored and hosted many of them in our home.
I am not afraid of 16 year old spies. To assume that they are all intelligence agents is stupid.
Even immigrants and students who hate the Party, and many do, do Beijing’s bidding because they all have family in China and family means far more to them than it does to Americans. Threaten their parents or their cousins and they will do anything they say and they are informed of the situation before they come here in case they don’t know deep down that is how it is.
