University of Washington ramps up Abbott Labs’ ‘fantastic’ test for COVID-19 antibodies

The University of Washington School of Medicine’s Virology Lab is reporting encouraging results from trial runs of a new test from Abbott Laboratories that detects the antibodies created by people who have had COVID-19, whether they knew they had it or not.

“This is a really fantastic test,” Keith Jerome, who leads UW Medicine’s virology program, told reporters today. He said UW’s lab could process 4,000 samples per day starting next week, and conceivably ramp up to 14,000 samples per day within a couple of weeks.

The test will be made available through health care providers, in medical clinics or perhaps through workplaces. It analyzes blood that’s drawn from patients, and looks for the telltale antibodies that a body’s immune system creates to defend against the coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2.

Epidemiologists say knowing who has had the virus will be key to tracking the true spread of COVID-19, and giving assurances to people who are returning to school and work — particularly in front-line jobs ranging from first responders and health care workers to grocery store clerks.

“It’s possible this could be part of a back-to-work process,” Jerome said.

It’s not yet clear how much immunity people develop to COVID-19 in the course of fighting off the virus, but if SARS-CoV-2 behaves like other coronaviruses, people with antibodies should have at least some protection from re-infection.

“It may not be perfect protection,” Jerome said. “It might be possible to get infected again, but if you did, you wouldn’t end up in a hospital, OK? You might feel a little off, but then those antibodies pop right back up, take care of it, and you’re better. So you get infected, but it doesn’t really matter. It’s more like a regular cold. That’s a very possible outcome.”

The Univ. of Washington Medicine Virology Lab has played a longstanding role in validating diagnostic tests for infectious diseases and immunity. It was one of the first labs to develop its own tests for the presence of virus that causes COVID-19, and is currently capable of processing thousands of coronavirus tests daily. Thanks to that track record, Abbott gave the lab early access to its antibody test, also known as a serology test.

Until it is known that these antibodies produce immunity apart from proving prevalence I do not see the reason to celebrate. A good percentage of common colds are corona viruses. Does getting a cold render you immune?

RE: Does getting a cold render you immune?

Well, at least it isn’t as lethal as Covid-19.

Dr Farci put the damper on these yesterday. Said if you are positive for antibodies, then how long will that immunity last - 1 month, 3 months, 1 year etc.?

There is never going to be an end to this virus. The evil left is running the country into the ground.

Another major company will be shipping their Covid-19 tests:

UC Davis has apparently been using this test for close to 2 months.

Roche announced plans to launch its own COVID-19 antibody blood test early next month as a complement to its previous high-throughput test for active infections authorized by the FDA in March.

The company’s Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 serology test is designed to identify people who have previously been infected by the virus, especially those who may not have displayed symptoms, by detecting the body’s immune response to the infection.

“Every reliable test on the market serves its purpose for healthcare systems to help us overcome this pandemic,” CEO Severin Schwan said in a statement. “Roche is collaborating closely with health authorities and ramping up production to ensure fast availability of the test globally.”

The antibody diagnostic could also support screening of high-risk groups, such as healthcare and food supply workers, and potentially allow them to return to work with a measured immunity to the disease, according to the company.

Designed for Roche’s cobas analyzers, the blood test could also be used in epidemiological research to better track the global spread of the coronavirus. The fully-automated hardware can provide COVID-19 results in about 18 minutes and process up to 300 tests per hour with certain equipment.

“The antibody test is an important next step in the fight against COVID-19,” said Thomas Schinecker, CEO of Roche’s diagnostics division. “Roche’s antibody test can be quickly scaled and made broadly available around the world as our instrument infrastructure is already in place.”

The company said it is working with the FDA to secure an Emergency Use Authorization, though the agency is currently allowing developers to distribute validated serology tests ahead of official review.

Roche also plans to launch the test in European countries accepting the CE mark and said it is aiming for monthly production in the “high double-digit” millions by June.

In 1996 Fauci promised an HIV vaccine. Still hasn’t happened. Scarf lady was working with him at the time.

The Dr. Fauci who used US taxpayer money to fund research that was illegal in the US at the Wuhan virus lab?

That Dr. Fauci?

Protecting his own baby, maybe?

I don’t trust a word that sob says.

That may shock you if you have no knowledge of his duplicitous background. A background which has facilitated millions of humans suffering from serious illness as a result of vaccine injury due to the retrovirus contamination which he knew about, yet worked to conceal it from the public.

I think the article addressed that point.

his point was to idiot governors who thought testing was some kind of magi bullet is that it wasn’t because a negative test didn’t mean you couldn’t get infected the next day ...

Then we all can be tested and get an ID card which we’ll have to carry.

Does getting a cold render you immune?

Not usually. The cold viruses mutates often. That's why there isn't a vaccine for colds.
