Florida man arrested while trying to quarantine on shuttered Disney island

Orange County Sheriff’s deputies found Richard McGuire on Disney’s Discovery Island on Thursday. He said he’d been there since Monday or Tuesday and had planned to camp there for a week, according to an arrest report.

The 42-year-old said he didn’t hear numerous deputies searching the private island for him on foot, by boat and by air because he was asleep in a building. He told the deputy he didn’t know it was a restricted area, despite there being numerous “no trespassing” signs.

Orange County Marine deputies on Bay Lake used a public address system to tell McGuire he was not allowed to be on the property, but he remained on the island, anyway, according to the arrest report.

A security representative for Disney said she saw McGuire using a company boat Thursday, noting that the area had several “no trespassing” signs and two closed gates. She asked the agency to press charges.

Took a rented Boston Whaler out to that island in 2013. It's a fascinating refuge of abandonment. Nature has an ability to remove or overtake structures if left to her own energies and resources.

The kids and I found it the only interesting thing at Disney.

Hell of a lot of assets looking for a lone trespasser on a deserted island.

“deputies searching the private island for him on foot, by boat and by air...”

Picture the most overgrown jungle island imaginable. Times it by ten. Properly trained, disciplined, and equipped, you could hide on that island as long as you wanted without being spotted.

Was there on a company retreat. At an evening party part of the event was having your picture taken with Mickey Mouse. The handlers failed to notice the beer I had tucked away in my jacket for the wait in line. I cracked the beer just before the camera went off and was tackled by security. The brand of Disney’s Mickey Mouse was micro-seconds from being forever ruined by having a bottle of Miller Light in the picture. They are some serious nut jobs at that place.

It's like Senior Skip Day, only at 30 or 40 bucks an hour...

I’ve never been to Disneyland. Why did they close off this island? In Florida I’d be afraid of snakes and alligators there. I wonder what this guy was doing for clean water and food.

Why did they close off this island?

Although Disney never officially stated its reasons for closing the park, poor attendance and high maintenance costs, combined with the newer and bigger Disney's Animal Kingdom being opened a year before, are the most likely causes.
