The cubes were tiny - small enough to hold between the finger and thumb - and weighed 125g each.

The symbols on them appeared to be some form of Sanskrit.

Curious to know more, Read posted photographs of his discovery up on social media.

"There were all sorts of stories flying around at first, the cubes really captured people's imaginations," he said. "What I learned is that they are Indian in origin and they show incantations for prayers which take effect when they are thrown in running water."

Exactly how old the cubes are, however, continues to remain a mystery.

Look like some type of record-keeping blocks. Maybe Norse?

I don't understand how he found them using a magnet - he says they are made out of lead?

Redundant, don’t you think?
If it were explained, it wouldn’t be a mystery.

The story says Indian in origin. And he looked down and saw them in the water. It did not say the magnet attached to them.

Google:
Even though it is not a spoken language, its significance is such that it is one of the 22 official languages of India. As an integral part of Hindu tradition and philosophy, Sanskrit is mostly used today as a ceremonial language in Hindu religious rituals. is a required subject in many schools.

Both the Chinese and Indian cultures believe that THEIR culture was the first and best. They might have been the first and best 3000 years ago but their countries NOW prove that "first" doesn't end up as best.
Besides, the Egypian culture built those pyramids and NO ONE can figure our how they did it. Well, if a culture has access to unlimited slaves, it can build almost anything.

Those cubes were part of religious ceremonies...asking the gods for favors, salvation and such. Nothing unusual or mind-boggling. Some were chanted and some were sung.

The article does say repeatedly that they were made of lead.

FWIW—this happened in England. Location makes a big difference in this story. England is strange—if it had been Peoria it would be bizarre.

Indians are always throwing stuff into the water for their pagan superstitions. They show up on youtube at UK mudlarking channels from time to time.
