The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).
Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, youll be solving them all within a few days. If youre stumped, take a break and return to it.
PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.
You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for todays Cryptogram.
I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hals Helper below.
You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.
One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please dont put the actual words of the quote in the clue.
A tricky cryptogram from The Arkansas Gazette.
MANY A MAN FAILS AS AN ORIGINAL THINKER SIMPLY BECAUSE HIS MEMORY IS TOO GOOD. NIETZSCHE
Very interesting. The last word is the key, and the double letter in the first word.
I took a stab at ZWS and that gave me WKDELWA. After that it was smooth sailing.
Five minutes. I spent the first three taking stabs in the dark, then looked at word 10 and the last word to get those, had a “duh” moment for the first name (based on letter pattern) and the rest was easy enough.
Thank you for posting these!
First word, the middle letters are more likely one of two, but when you look at word ten, it tells you the most likely letter and then you get the last word. Good puzzle from a great man, in fact one of my idols when I was in medical school.
First time in a while I had ‘trouble’...Kept getting hung up on opening word....when author first name ‘fell in’ it started to open up.
If people think one is a fool, best not to open mouth and remove all doubt.
Um, er, er, um (think BO without teleprompter)
Last word, after correctly assuming the double letter in the first word.
Weird, got it all but the 7th word, really had a block on that one, even with the rest of the quote staring at me.
Author’s first name isn’t too difficult to guess at a glance; then an educated guess of the first word and the rest was fairly straightforward.
10 min. Somehow tripped over the 4th word and that kind of gave a base to return to.
Yeah, that was kind of hard. I finally got lucky on the first word, and that started me off on the right track at last.
Definitely tricky. Figured the first name of author and then stumbled in to the rest
