Mystic Mountain Monster being Destroyed (Astronomy Picture of the Day)
NASA APOD ^ | Hubble/NASA

Posted on 05/25/2020 1:52:20 PM PDT by MtnClimber

Explanation: Inside the head of this interstellar monster is a star that is slowly destroying it. The huge monster, actually an inanimate series of pillars of gas and dust, measures light years in length. The in-head star is not itself visible through the opaque interstellar dust but is bursting out partly by ejecting opposing beams of energetic particles called Herbig-Haro jets. Located about 7,500 light years away in the Carina Nebula and known informally as Mystic Mountain, the appearance of these pillars is dominated by dark dust even though they are composed mostly of clear hydrogen gas. The featured image was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. All over these pillars, the energetic light and winds from massive newly formed stars are evaporating and dispersing the dusty stellar nurseries in which they formed. Within a few million years, the head of this giant, as well as most of its body, will have been completely evaporated by internal and surrounding stars.

Wow!

It looks like several giant dust mites caught up in an expanding ball of dust! Like a view from an electron microscope, but in some weird reverse mode; it’s light years in length!

Mystic Mountain? It looks like a humanoid wizard and his familiars! Some sort of titanic living entity - makes "Ancient Aliens" stories look like a joke

Besides, he's on a horse, not a throne. For gosh sakes can't you make out anything correctly? 8>)

Sorry my eyes are watering and I have to squint with one eye cause my “eye doctor” made the wrong prescription. Plus I’m over 70 by a ways so forgive my stigmatized nearsightedness. So that’s my excuse. Honest. Cross my fingers.

Yeah I have macular degeneration, so I share your plight of bad eyesight. I have to use a magnifying glass to read posts and articles. I’m 2 years behind you in age as well. In other words, I have no clue what the heck we were looking at. 8>)

i’m thinking it might be Vishnu, the Hindu god of creation. You are way more than 2 years behind. But that’s just more water over the dam. Personally I’m glad I’ve lived to see all of these wonders; just wish that the dream of space flight hadn’t been so prematurely cut off back in 1964.

What they are doing now is playing catch up but we are very far behind where we should have been: Mars by 1965, Saturn by 1970 - that was then, now we struggle to get people to LEO.
