‘Mutant ticks’ overwhelming hospitals in Siberia

“Mutant ticks are attacking - this is not a tabloid headline but a fact,” reported Zvezda, the Russian defence ministry’s newspaper.

The mutant ticks have been found in several regions of Siberia.

They combine the “worst qualities” of two common types of Russian tick - Ixodes persulcatus, the taiga tick, and the “malicious” Pavlovsky or Far Eastern tick.

They attack people in both long and short grass.

A “large number inter-species hybrids” which produce “fertile offspring” have invaded Novosibirsk and Tomsk regions, said Dr Nina Tikhunova, of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine, Novosibirsk.

This mutant “is capable of carrying infectious agents associated with both parent species”.

Many cities say they have no stocks of immunoglobulin to treat sufferers, or only enough for children.

Khabarovsk region says it is has run out of immunoglobulin and encephalitis vaccine.

New supplies are only expected in July, with people urged to stay home.

Too bad lightning bugs/fireflies don’t live up to their name.

Well, if one of them is big, blue and has a best bud named Arthur, that tick’s ok!

I hate ticks. Like Indy hates snakes.

The doctors here don’t tell you come in if you get bit, or have the tick analyzed. Come in with a bullseye rash and a fever, or confusion and headache, or one joint arthritis.

I’ve had Lyme twice and it doesn’t make you immune.

But it is possible to kill ticks with your immune system. I used to, lost the ability, might have done it again last week.

Asian Longhorns tick is new to the US, swarms in vast numbers. Tolerates sunny dry conditions better than deer tick.

I hate ticks.

Just keep them away from here!

Seems to me I remember a tick invasion from Russia some time ago.

“Seems to me I remember a tick invasion from Russia some time ago.”

Was that after the Bolshevik revolution?

Ticks have no redeeming qualities. Maybe somehow in the grand scheme of nature, but none in my eyes.

My wife knew a woman who bought a few acres of land in a northern rural part of Maine, and there was a small shack on the property. She decided to sleep in the shack one night when she was visiting the property trying to figure out next steps.

She woke up and there were ticks all over her, and they were marching towards her on the floor...she ended up tearing off her clothes and running into her car where she spent the rest of the night picking ticks off of herself.

Shudder. I hate ticks more than spiders, if that is even possible.

2020 wrapping things up as the year ends with a zombie apocalypse isn’t sounding so far fetched lately.
