Details emerge on father who drove truck off cliff with toddlers inside allegedly on purpose

a suspected suicidal father drove his truck off the ledge at Sunset Cliffs with his two-year-old twin daughters inside early Saturday.

"He had driven off the end of a 50-foot cliff and was upside down in the water,” said officer Jonathan Wiese, now deemed a hero after he jumped in the water to rescue the girls.

the twin two-year-olds were taken without permission by their father and their mother received numerous calls and texts that she would never see them again."My thought is how do I get down there. There are no stairs, there is no easy way. My first thought was jump but I'm afraid of heights," said Wiese.

The former U.S. Marine Corpsman grabbed his 100-foot dog leash and other officers on the scene helped lower him to the water.

“The only non-crushed area of the car was the driver’s seat compartment, so had those girls been in a car seat in the back, they would have most likely been killed," Wiese said.

Brians is facing a list of charges, including attempted murder and kidnapping. He is due in court on June 30.

Yes. The marine(?) repelled down the 30 ft?cliff with a dog leash and rescued the two girls from the submerged truck.

“He is due for [immediate execution] on June 30.”

Fixed!

Thank goodness for that HERO. Hopefully the girls are too young to remember their selfish, HATEFUL ‘daddy’ as they grow up without him.

Funny how nobody remembers Susan Smith, who did the same thing to FIVE of her children. I think she got off without prison by reason of female privilege insanity.

Let's see if they're as merciful to a man.

“Funny how nobody remembers Susan Smith, who did the same thing to FIVE of her children.”

I think you are conflating Susan Smith with Andrea Yates.

Both are evil POS monsters.

“ A San Diego police officer who saved twin 2-year-old girls and their father after their car plunged off Sunset Cliffs shared how he made the daring rescue — and how much of a personal impact the incident had on him.

San Diego Police K-9 Officer, Jonathan Wiese, said he was working Saturday morning just after 5 a.m. when he heard the call for help over police scanners.

“Male subject left his house with his twin 2-year-old daughters, was possibly armed with a gun and threatening suicide by driving his truck off the Coronado Bridge,” said Wiese, recalling the call.

He said he rushed to the Coronado Bridge but just a few minutes later, he found out the suspect was driving quickly through Point Loma and had plunged off Sunset Cliffs, near Hill Street, into the ocean below.

The officer’s mind was racing.

“Oh my God. What the heck? Please tell me the kids weren’t in there. Please tell me he dropped them off,” Wiese said.

Wiese said he was one of the first responding officers. He saw the mangled car upside down in the water. He said he thought about jumping in, and estimated a 30-foot drop, but then he remembered he had a 100-foot leash in his patrol car.

He said only five SDPD K-9 officers have the specific leash, which is most commonly used during SWAT-related cases. Wiese tied the leash around his body and passed the other end to officers standing by. Then, he rappelled down the cliff.

He said once he made it down the side of the cliff, the father was in the water holding his two daughters while trying to tread water and keep from drowning.

“He had both girls,” Wiese explained. “He was holding them and trying to tread water, but they were all going under. One was awake and crying the other one was pretty lifeless.”

He managed to rescue all three from the water and pushed them onto the rocks.

The officer said one of the girls was struggling to breathe and he knew he had to get her to first responders quickly in order to save her life.

“She was somewhat crying, somewhat not. I tried to invert her, get the water out of her lungs, make sure she’s breathing. I put her in the bag, they threw the leash back down and hoisted her back up,” said Wiese.

Wiese said the rescue took an emotional toll on him. He has a 2-year-old daughter of his own. He said his family — his toddler, 4-year-old son, and wife — is what motivated him to act so quickly.

“I would do for the public, what I would do for them. I treat everyone that way. I treat them as if they were my family down there, and that’s pretty much what happened in this case,” said Wiese.

Police said the father and daughters are expected to recover. It’s not clear what kind of charges the man is facing.

Last year, Wiese was honored for his response during the Poway Synagogue shooting.“

Not Susan Smith...she killed two children and is in jail now. I suspect you are thinking of a woman in Houston.....Andrea Yates and she is in a mental institution.

Susan Smith killed her two sons, drove into lake, left them to die. She was convicted and still incarcerated.

Maybe you are thinking of the woman who drowned her five children in the bathtub? Andrea Yates. Chased the eldest child them around the house. Horrific. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrea_Yates

Several other people have already corrected my confusion of the two killers.

they threw the leash back down and hoisted her back up,

OK, that’s a German Shepherd leash, not a Chihuahua leash.

Those girls’ guardian angels were watching over them - one of the few guys with a long leash shows up. (Of course, where were those angels when the dad took them in the first place?)

How much does a German Shepard weigh - 100+ pounds? And then have to have enough strength in the leash for when the dog lunges. And then add in a safety factor of “X”. I’m guessing the cop made some mental calculations and figured it would hold. Probably.

Lord, bless Officer Wiese, every single day of his life, and meet ALL his needs, body, soul, and spirit, I pray. Bless those twins, as well, and have mercy on their father, who was shocked into trying to keep them afloat, after, in, evidently, a state of depression, anger, and despair, he plunged them into the ocean. May what he did change his life, whether he’s imprisoned OR committed, and cause him to know that there is a God in Heaven who cares for each and every one of us. In Jesus Name, Amen.
