Baseball has its Bull Durham. Basketball has Hoosiers. Football has Rudy. And the mad sport of roller derby has Kansas City Bomber! Step aside, boys, she's coming through. In the early Seventies, the roller game was the hottest thing on wheels when this smash-mouth spin-fest elbowed its way onto screens.

Is it just me, or does she resemble our beautiful First Lady in that photo?

The 1970s was a great decade for roller skating.

Yes, when I was a kid, my mother would strap me in a couple of these, push me out onto the sidewalk and tell me to be back home by dark.

How much of her own skating, her own spills and fights, did Raquel do in that movie?

I've got a brand new pair of rollerskates

You've got a brand new key

Boy, I hated that song.

“How much of her own skating, her own spills and fights, did Raquel do in that movie?”

She actually did a lot of her own work. She even broke a wrist doing one stunt. But they were simple then and her looks were what was going to sell the movie. But even they weren’t enough.

Melanie had much better songs than that one. But "Brand New Key" was her only #1 song for some strange reason.

Around that same time, Chuck Berry also scored his one and only #1 song with "My Ding-A-Ling". All those rock and roll classics Berry sang and THAT childish ditty was the only song that took him to the top of the charts!

Both songs were laden with sexual innuendo. But I was only 9 or 10 years old at the time so took a few years to pick up on it.

Give Raquel some credit. She broke her wrist in that movie.

I remember the Roller Derby back then! “AND HERE COMES WESTON!” POW! Off come the helmets and it is cut-slash-burn! Cat fight!

70's???

Sure does not look like that crap we used to deal with.

Made a skateboard in JHS woodshop early 60's. No spiffy wheels available , just the junk caveman skate wheels.

Her injury may explain her tragic inability to swing her arms which led to her future downfall.

Yup! Joanie Weston, married to Buddy Atkinson Jr. Skated for the Philadelphia Warriors, originally owned by the same people who owned the Warriors basketball team many years earlier before they relocated to CA. Also Judy Arnold, Jim Trotter, Charlie O’Conell. It was actually more fun to watch than wrestling.
