Mayor Durkan vetoes council’s 2020 budget revision that would have cut up to 100 Seattle police officers
Seattle Times ^ | 8/21/20 | Evan Bush

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, after vetoing Friday the revised 2020 budget approved last week by the City Council, called for new collaboration with council members, with whom she’s often been at odds.

“The people of Seattle expect us to work together,” Durkan said during a Friday afternoon news conference, adding that she had spoken to Council President M. Lorena González on how to “make changes in a more thoughtful, deliberate way.”

The council’s adjustments to the budget would have cut up to 100 police officers, slashed the salaries of police command staff and also scrapped the city’s Navigation Team, which performs outreach to people experiencing homelessness and clears encampments. Durkan strongly opposed those measures. Seattle Police Department Chief Carmen Best retired in objection to them.

Durkan described the council’s cuts to police as imprudent, saying they had “no plan for how the city will bridge gaps in the police response that will be caused if we lose 100 police officers” and “no plans for how the city will address encampments or RVs that pose a public safety risk.”

She also objected to cutting the salaries of SPD’s command staff.

The council has votes to override, and it seems likely.

Sounds like the “Council” needs to have its salaries cut to Zer0.

Probably wont matter. Cops will just leave on their own.

“...and also scrapped the city’s Navigation Team...”

How quaint...”Navigation Team”. What are they a bunch of sailboat enthusiasts?

Duran suspects that Trump will be re-elected.
When that happens, he’ll be coming to Seattle and Portland and bringing pure hell with him. She’s planning/starting her “out” with this to avoid any form of prosecution. What she doesn’t realize is that it’s way too late for that now.

Kshama Sawant should be dragged by the hair out of her $800,000 mansion and shot once in the head right in the street in front of the place. It should have happened months ago. Naturally, I mean that in the nicest possible way.

That was stupid, he should have signed it.

Why pay cops when you won’t use them?

And, I’m sure, in a “mostly peaceful” manner.

Along with any security they get. No Chicago Mayor Lightfoot Protection Zone for them.

Possibly Jan or Feb 2020 or so I heard Bill O'Reilly asked about his new book on the inside story of friendship with Trump. He said if re-elected, Trump , he feels, will go after the enemies who tried to ruin his presidency. Those especially in California. Payback time.

Of course, I hope he wins. I definitely hope he does the payback thing. About time.

A little tidbit for you.

The mayor is a woman and you pay the cops even of you don’t use them.

The Nav team was a group of cops teamed up with parks dept employees, social workers, and a few other departments that went into the homeless camps and did outreach to.them to get them off drugs and into shelters.....and if the camps had immediate public safety issues they would move the bums out and all the trash would get hauled off.

The city council hates the “sweeps” because the bums don’t accept help and just get moved along....whcih of course is some systemic problem caused by right wingers and not the 100s of millions they spend subsidizing bums.
