Environmentalists have long promoted renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind farms to save the climate. But what about when those technologies destroy the environment? In this provocative talk, Time Magazine Hero of the Environment and energy expert, Michael Shellenberger explains why solar and wind farms require so much land for mining and energy production, and an alternative path to saving both the climate and the natural environment. Michael Shellenberger is a Time Magazine Hero of the Environment and President of Environmental Progress, a research and policy organization. A lifelong environmentalist, Michael changed his mind about nuclear energy and has helped save enough nuclear reactors to prevent an increase in carbon emissions equivalent to adding more than 10 million cars to the road. He lives in Berkeley, California.
(Well worth watching and spreading.)

I loathe most environazis. This guy ain't one of them.
Bookmark to watch when I get done with work.
Ping.
Reminds me of Penn & Teller show on this stuff. It was pretty good. But very profane and explicit sometimes.
Solar panels work and batteries work
do you wanna keep in the utility forever? go for it
I have thousands of customers that dont need them at all ; or just simply use them and dont even pay them for it!
But they will have to buy new batteries in a few short yrs.
Where do they get the energy to mine all the minerals needed to make those batteries?
They work in some applications.
I smell bullshit.
What state do you live in?
As an Engineer, I have known this for my entire professional career of 35 years. But policy and it funding is driven by politicians.
“Why renewables cant save the planet...”
-
The planet does not need to be saved.
It is doing just fine.
As one that has lived on solar, they can work, but are far from clean. Good for power at remote locations, boats and such. Far far from being clean from an environmental point of view.
The show was called Bulls**t (replace the ** with the actual letters) and ran on Showtime for 6 or 8 seasons. I have them all on DVD and even though the series was cancelled over 10 years ago, it still holds up today.
I would like to “keep in the utility”.
(whatever the heck you think that means)
“As an Engineer, I have known this for my entire professional career of 35 years.”
Best college course I took was thermodynamics. It was taught by a former astronaut. He had the class work through every idiot idea, all of which are still being pushed today. Even making wild assumptions about increases in efficiencies due to technology changes, none of the energy ideas made sense compared to oil, coal or natural gas. Even those technologies touting their cleanliness were not so clean when you took into consideration their entire lifecycle of dirt and destruction.
“Sustainability” is a scam.
Finally someone with sense.
Solar powered excavators....come on man!
Lets talk about monolithic decommissioned wind turbine blades choking up landfills or toxic solar panels classified as hazardous waste. Batteries? Another toxic waste....
Is there anything liberals havent screwed up or failed at?
The People are f*****!
Oh I know what it was. Just it was VERY X-rated.
Too bad they couldn’t just stick with the actual subject than having naked guys and girls around all the time, never mind the cussing!
The problem is often, the precise definition of “efficiency”.
Compared to what?
The classic study and example was heat pumps.
They’d state how “efficient” it was because they’d squeeze some heat out of whatever air was blowing by. But they were not measuring how much energy was going into even running the thing. Nor certainly, comparing how much genuine degrees were generated vs. something like a gas furnace.
The claims of “efficiency” by all these appliance standards and so on is largely the same smoke & mirrors.
