DES MOINES, Iowa — Some Republicans are accusing the party’s neoconservative hawks of playing dirty pool in an attempt to smear Sen. Rand Paul as a bigot for having an aide who once expressed admiration for Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth.
The aide, Jack Hunter, who quit on Monday, was eased out by Mr. Paul after a neoconservative publication revealed that, as a radio “shock jock” some years ago, Mr. Hunter advocated that the Southern states secede once again from the union.
Saying he had become more libertarian and broad-minded since his days as the “Southern Avenger,” Mr. Hunter revealed his resignation in a letter to the libertarian-minded Daily Caller website.
An unusual mixture of evangelicals and libertarians claims the Hunter exposure was an attempt to discredit Mr. Paul, a freshman Kentucky Republican. They assert that the enmity of the interventionist factions in both the Republican and Democratic parties for Mr. Paul stems in part from his being the only potential 2016 GOP presidential nomination contender so far to condemn the neoconservatives for their readiness to use military force to change foreign governments, particularly those considered a threat to Israel.
Mr. Paul delayed nudging Mr. Hunter out the door for 13 days, after the July 9 story appeared in the Washington Free Beacon.
The Beacon is part of the Center for American Freedom, whose chairman, Michael Goldfarb, was once an adviser to the strongly interventionist Emergency Committee for Israel, which includes leading neocon William Kristol on its board. Some in the anti-interventionist GOP faction thinks it is significant that Beacon Editor Matthew Continetti is married to Mr. Kristol’s daughter.

Neoconservatives and Neoconfederates. But it seems Rand Paul could have found an aide who was not a John Wilkes Booth fan.
Make him resign? Hell, give him a raise.
So the man wasn’t fired because he was in any incompetent, but for something he said years ago.
Pauls enemies scout up this story and hit him with it and rand falls into the trap.
I never was a fan of Rand Paul and now like him even less.
Loyalty to a boss and loyalty to an employee go hand in hand.

Rand is not to be trusted.
He supports amnesty and then does not vote for it for political reasons .
He supports the K Street Bagman Mitch Viper McConnell who has been literally sold the GOP down the river at every chance .
I don’t know why, but I have never trusted him.
There is something about him, and to bend to this little bit of pressure and fire a man means he is less a man.
Seems to be the way it works nowadays.
There's something about a person who says that a man who resigned was "fired". Smells like bearing false witness - fancy talk for lying. I sure as hell don't trust you.
Don’t lose sight of what is really going on here.
Rand Paul is seen as a threat by factions of the Republican Party. What we are seeing here is a preemptive strike against him and any aspirations he may have for 2016.
There will be another shot, and another, until such time as he is deemed to be rendered ineffective and out of the 2016 game.
Regardless of what anyone here thinks of Rand Paul, realize that the GOP is determined to run another McCain/Romney/Dole clone in 2016 and will sabotage anyone that they think could be remotely considered a future threat to that goal. If it’s not Paul, it’s someone else that might fit that mold. As long as he’s not singing the [Vichy] Party line, they’ll get him.

The knives are already being drawn for Rand Paul. The RINOs and neocons will be after him, not to mention the Left. He mentioned gay marriage in the same sentence as bestiality. Do you really think they’re not going to give him the full treatment? Unfortunately (or not), Rand Paul is a smartass. When he said Obama’s stance on gay marriage couldn’t get any gayer, that was awesome. I love it. He often says things that I say, but he’s a Senator, and it will undo him on the national stage. Still, he will get some great shots in as it happens. His triangulation on immigration was disappointing and cynical, but it’s not what will sink him.
A Senate with Paul, Cruz, Lee AND Palin would really shake things up.
I suggest you do further research. John Wilkes Booth was working as an agent for the men who controlled the Bank of England.
