What Trump, Rubio and Cruz are betting on to win the Nevada caucuses
The Los Angeles Times ^ | February 22, 2016 | Michael Finnegan reporting from Las Vegas

Ted Cruz is trying to drum up support in rural Nevada from Republicans angry at the federal government's control of most of the state's land.

Marco Rubio wants to lay claim to the Mormon vote that drove Mitt Romney's two big victories in presidential caucuses here.

Jeb Bush's exit from the Republican presidential race Saturday in effect turned Nevada into a three-man brawl, with Cruz and Rubio scrambling to break Trump's winning streak after victories in New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Over the weekend, Rubio's team started cajoling Bush's huge pool of big-money donors. The senator from Florida is the top-tier candidate most in danger of running out of money, newly released finance reports show.

Rubio has yet to win a state but is trying to be seen as the most viable mainstream conservative alternative to Trump, a case that would be easier to make if he performs well in Nevada....

And in a state with a large immigrant population, Donald Trump is tapping the resentment of white blue-collar Nevadans by promising to wall off Mexico.

Marco Rubio wants to lay claim to the Mormon vote —

ain’t gonna happen. The Rube ain’t a brother, he’s an outsider.

Not going to happen. I lived n Nevada for over a decade, I understand the LDS mindset. If you ain’t in, you’re out.

The polls make it look like Trump will have a big win. But, NV is a caucus state, which is always harder to predict. He has led in NV for a long time, and he has campaigned there several times already, so he most likely has people on the ground, unlike his effort in Iowa.

I’m going to predict that Trump wins with 40 percent of the vote, Rubio 2nd with 27, Cruz 3rd with 24, Carson 7 and Kasich 2 percent.

My wife grew up in Las Vegas in the 1950’s and 60’s as a Mormon, and you are spot on! Las Vegas Mormons make the one’s in Utah look like raving liberals. Las Vegas was founded by the Mormons! (along with the Union Pacific RR)

A well-reasoned article. I never in a million years would have thought that I, as a conservative, would follow a link to the LA Times to learn the details of the Republican candidates electioneering in the Nevada caucuses. How refreshing to read an intelligent analysis of the campaigns - such a contrast to the blathering vitriol of Michael Medved who on his latest show was screaming that Trump will lead us into a police state - I only listened to the one hour of over the top anti-Trump screaming from him because I made the mistake of falling asleep with the radio on and I wasn’t wide awake enough to get up and turn him off.

Jeb was only polling 1-5% in the most recent polls, so I don’t see how that’s going to help Rubio all that much. And the Jeb funds didn’t help Jeb much.

Campaign funds are more important than SuperPAC money this time and Rubio doesn’t fundraise well.

After the first inning of game one of the World Series. The score is 2 to 1 in favor of the blabbermouth.

It’s far from over.

In fact Trump will struggle big time tomorrow in Nevada...because it’s a caucus and not an open primary.
