Glenn Beck: I’ll drop Ted Cruz like a hot potato if these affair allegations are true

Via RCP. My headline’s misleading, as I’ll explain in a sec, but it does capture the newsiest soundbite from this clip. Standard operating procedure when a politician’s caught in a sex scandal is for his close allies to rally around him. It was a regrettable lapse, he has much to atone for, but we all make mistakes and in the end it’s a private matter — you know how the script goes. Beck’s having none of that. If Cruz is guilty of what the National Enquirer’s accused him of, he says, I’m done. I heard that sentiment repeatedly from Cruz fans on social media this weekend. This is a campaign-killer if it can be proved, and Beck abandoning Cruz would be a perfect way to start the avalanche. Remember, Beck hasn’t merely been Cruz’s most vocal supporter in conservative media; he’s talked about him increasingly as someone divinely ordained for the job. A Cruz cheating scandal would betray what his supporters expect of him morally in a way that a Clinton sex scandal, say, never would. There’s no coming back from it.

What makes the headline (a little) misleading is that Beck doesn’t believe the accusations. This clip is 10 minutes, in fact, of Beck making the case for why the Enquirer story is almost certainly false, and he only gets through three of the five reasons he has for doubting before he’s forced to cut to commercial. All of them are familiar to you: Cruz is too nerdy to pull it off; he’s too ambitious to be that reckless; and there just isn’t any evidence from people who know him best to support it. Erica Grieder, an editor at Texas Monthly who’s been covering Cruz since before he joined the Senate, emphasized the last point on Friday....

I’ll drop my support for Cruz if he is found to be a reptilian space alien.

Same thing with Trump—I won’t vote for him if he’s a reptilian space alien UNLESS Shrillary is his opponent.

I will give Beck credit for bringing up the subject. Near as I can tell Rush never brought it up.

I notice Freepers love to post Glenn Beck stories and comment on them. He’s really like the toothache you keep blowing on to see if it still hurts.

Beck’s job is done.
He has Cruz and Trump fighting like rabid dogs.
In 2 months Beck is going to go to ground and Bishop Romney will show up at the convention.

But I thought Ted was Anointed with a capital A? I’m certainly a theological lightweight, but if Ted’s Anointed and he’s been forming the beast with two backs outside marriage...who is Beck to call the whole thing off? Like King David did anything less?

Amazing how important this beck guy is to the cruz campaign. And it speaks volumes about cruz himself.

There are people you can trust as allies through thick& thin. Obviously that does not define Glen Beck. What a sanctimonious hypocrite!! One can easily imagine his stepping up to "throw the first stone," at some girl who yielded to temptation.

Since I have endorsed Donald Trump, who whatever his failings, has been consistent as a rock in defending an American future against the "politically correct" bullies, I am not making that comment as a Cruz supporter. He also--and I say this with great sorrow; because I am as strict a constructionist as Cruz--also showed himself to have a major hypocrisy streak, when he bore false witness against Trump, by cherry picking old facts, and putting a completely distorted interpretation on them. But I will never join a lynch party over accusations that start with tasteless gossip, over private conduct of a sort that truly moral people do not poke their noses into. (Advocating certain conduct ceases to be private; but that is not the case here.)

The supporting evidence is circumstantial at this point. I believe Ted is more likely than not to have had sex with other women during the seven years he and his wife were living apart because of personal experience. He acts like the other serial womanizers that I have known. They all had terrible childhoods. Think of Bill Clinton for a good example.

Both of Ted’s parents had trouble with alcohol and his dad abandoned the family when Ted was very young. It is said that Ted blamed his mother for the breakup. For some reason a boy growing up without a father figure seems to cause many to be unfaithful husbands later in life. I don’t know why, but I have known many others exactly like this.

Y’know - all Cruz has to do is convert to Mormonism and marry the women. Problem solved...

That is to Rush's credit; not to Beck's!

Who anointed Beck to poke into private lives and pass judgment on anyone!

Now to return to what is truly important here! As I have been urging for months, we need both the Trump supporters & the Cruz supporters--completely complementary conservative factions--the pure patriots & pure Constitutionalists to take America back. Poking into bedrooms and closets, looking for dirt, is a useless distraction in a crisis where the issue is survival.

“Why repeat gossip until proven”

Cruz stone walling the FEC investigation into the $500K transfer to the Carley campaign is not gossip. Why is Ted stone walling?

Erica Grieder, an editor at Texas Monthly who’s been covering Cruz since before he joined the Senate, emphasized the last point on Friday in a series of tweets. How is it, she wondered, that the most hated man in the Senate, who’s had reporters sniffing around him for four solid years, has managed to keep his extracurriculars a secret from journalists and oppo researchers?

8. It's possible that even this sinister mastermind has human foibles, but would he bang a volunteer in a closet at a public event? No. Duh.

— EricaGrieder (@EricaGrieder) March 25, 2016

9. Further, if the controversial Cruz had snuck off with the controversial KP at a public event in 2012, I'd have heard about it, years ago.

— EricaGrieder (@EricaGrieder) March 25, 2016

14. None of my sources, in Cruz's circles or KP's, thinks this is true or even plausible (one yelled at me for asking stupid questions. lol)

— EricaGrieder (@EricaGrieder) March 25, 2016

18. Point being that more than one outlet has been trying to chase down Cruz rumors since January at latest. They'd have evidence by now.

— EricaGrieder (@EricaGrieder) March 25, 2016

Forget about the primaries. If Cruz were a serial cheater, don’t you think word would have gotten around to Senate Republicans long ago? And once it did, do you think Mitch McConnell and company would have sat on that dirt for month after month, letting candidates like Marco Rubio to whom they’re well disposed twist in the wind? They would have killed Cruz with this ages ago to clear a path for Rubio or some more palatable conservative alternative. Or they would have leaked it before the primaries in the hope that Cruz would be so wrecked by it that he’d be forced out of the Senate. Too many people would benefit from ending Cruz’s political career for me to believe that there’s hard evidence out there that somehow hasn’t made its way into the media yet.
