Trump: I’m open to Cruz as VP
The Hill's Ballot Box Blog ^ | May 4, 2016 | Mark Hensch

Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he would consider making Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) his running mate.

“I respect Ted,” he told host Bill O’Reilly on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor." "He was a very strong competitor. He really competed hard and tough."

“He’s certainly a capable guy,” the presumptive GOP presidential nominee added. "It’s something we can think about.” Trump defeated Cruz in Tuesday’s Indiana GOP presidential primary, making him the presumptive nominee.

Cruz suspended his Oval Office bid shortly afterward, saying that his results in the Hoosier State “foreclose” his path to the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump on Wednesday said that he does not resent Cruz for their often bitter contest against each another.

“It’s an easy thing,” he said of the nominating process. "He said some things and he made some things up and he took some things that were said out of context.”

Reports emerged earlier on Wednesday that retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson would serve on a selection committee for finding Trump’s running mate.

Carson, another former GOP presidential candidate, will help Trump make his pick before the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July.

Trump on Wednesday said that Carson’s involvement stems from his reluctance in becoming the vice presidential nominee himself.

“I don’t think Ben’s looking at that,” he said. "He’s a friend of mine. He’s been so helpful. He’s a terrific guy.”

Trump additionally reiterated that he is also eyeing Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio), who suspended his White House run earlier Wednesday.

“I would certainly consider him,” he said. "During the debates I’d always find myself talking to John. I’ve had a good relationship with him, so we’ll see how that turns out.

“I don’t want to talk too much about it as I am considering a couple of people. We do have a lot of candidates who would be very, very good."

Apparently Trump has grasped the politics-isn’t-personal adage quite well.

The fact that Trump is being magnanimous in his praise of former opponents is a good thing, IMO.

However, I DO NOT want to see Kasich anywhere near the presidency. The same goes for just about all of the earlier race dropouts (ESPECIALLY Jeb).

How do you back-pedal on “Lyin’ Ted,” Donald? Perhaps he’s just saying that to try and heal the party.

Most legal experts say he is. Which law school did you attend?

Good Lord, will this never end?

Trump may say he's open to Cruz being his VP. He may even mean it. But what earthly reason would Cruz have for accepting the offer?

It is not going to happen. Ever.

I’m okay with Cruz as VP for eight years, but I would very much prefer him on the Supreme Court for the next 35 years.

Not VP but Supreme Court Justice would be a good match. Encouraging that Trump would say this though.

Agreed. The VP has to oppose Obamacare, oppose Amnesty, and support our individual, God-given right to keep and bear arms. Kasich is wrong on all three key issues (and on many more issues that are almost as important).

Not to mention a man that Trump himself said was not constitutionally qualified to be president, as well as being the son of a man who Trump believes helped kill Kennedy. I'm wondering if Trump himself has short term memory problems or if he thinks the rest of the country does?

Cruz is a bright guy and a Constitutionalist so he might make a good VP. Newt Gingrich would make a good choice too. I’ve always been impressed with his intellect. Just need to examine his stances on the issues.

How can you say you respect someone that you called, “Lying Ted”, someone you have said is an immigrant and isn’t even allowed to be President (Birther)?
You can’t have it both ways. Leave it alone. The damage is done there.

It would make for an interesting case for the SCOTUS. I don’t see a
lot that he brings to the race outside of the far rightwing, maybe.
