Challenger wins national post at NM Republican convention Gov. Martinez supporter ousted)

Harvey Yates Jr. defeated incumbent Pat Rogers for a state post on the Republican National Committee on Saturday, elevating an outspoken critic of Gov. Susana Martinez’s governing style to a prestigious – if largely symbolic – GOP position.

At the New Mexico Republican convention at the Sandia Resort and Casino, Yates received 278 of the 473 votes cast by Republican delegates – or 58.8 percent – to oust Rogers.

A former state Republican Party chairman, Yates has been critical of Martinez and her political adviser, Jay McCleskey, in recent years, while Rogers has been closely linked to both the Martinez administration and McCleskey.

However, Yates downplayed talk of GOP discord after his victory over Rogers, who had held the Republican National Committeeman post since 2008.

“We can bring the party to unity, but come the next gubernatorial election, if (the economy) isn’t changed, we’re going to be held accountable,” Yates told the Journal.

Martinez’ name has been frequently mentioned as “a rising star”, even a possible ticket mate, before.

I recall only one scandal with her aide or someone, that indicated that she was not all that prolife, after all. Whether that’s true, I don’t know.

Like Scott Walker, she is perhaps considered somewhat a modern day miracle simply by getting elected to the Governor’s seat, in an increasingly blue state.

Depends. She is chair of the Republican governors conference but not a Trump supporter (endorsed Rubio). Has not yet said she supports Trump, nor whether she will even appear at his sole NM rally tomorrow (I would bet not). Her campaign manager and political advisor, McCleskey, has been involved in some controversial matters, likely not illegal, but fodder for the Rat politicians and press. It's time for a change, but whether Yates can do anything to help win this heavily Latino state for Trump is doubtful.

If it is “old oil money”, Yates, Jr. is related to the Bush crime family.

They definitely do not want Gov. Martinez in the Trump Administration for some reason.

Any guesses as to why? Or is coal mainly the reason?

So, do you have an idea why? What have her problems been exactly? Just curious.

She's a Trump critic, not a supporter.

Yates Petroleum is a somewhat small, family owned oil outfit from I think Artesia or maybe Roswell, NM reaching back to the 1930’s. I do not think they would have ever been fish big enough for the Bush’s to deal with. Pappy Bush was in Midland, Tx in the late 40’s until the mid 50’s but then left to the off shore part of the oil business, primarily in the Gulf.

As to why they want to keep the governor out of the loop is beyond me. NM politics is very quirky to me, I guess because they are so small population wise and political power wise. Politicians there prey on Hispanics and Indians maintaining their power in the capital of Santa Fe. Californicators started moving in there about 20 years ago and have thoroughly entrenched themselves in the government.

As a “red state” it is lost forever but thank goodness they don’t have many electoral votes.

Besides her endorsement of fellow Latino Rubio, she's more of a moderate Republican and because she has two more years to go in her administration with mostly Democrats in the legislature, she's doing her best to straddle the fence.

Yes, that’s the way I see it, and unable to put a machine in place to benefit her, as in Wisconsin, where Scott Walker had Ryan and Priebus to send $ aid and $ comfort.

Thanks, CedarDave.
