Portsmouth councilman wants to ban racist groups from protesting

Councilman Mark Whitaker says he wants city leaders to consider banning racist groups from protesting in Portsmouth.

Whitaker sent an email Tuesday to City Council members, City Manager Lydia Pettis Patton and City Attorney Solomon Ashby requesting that the group discuss the issue at the Aug. 21 public work session.

The councilman said he made the request in light of “the tragic events in Charlottesville and other issues across the country involving White-Supremacist, White-Nationalist, Neo-Nazi, and other hate groups with a history and pattern of perpetrating violence on citizens.”

On Saturday, a white-supremacist gathering in Charlottesville turned deadly when a car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing a woman and injuring 19 others.

But restricting speech, even if it's hateful, violates the First Amendment and puts the city at legal risk, fellow Councilman Bill Moody said.

In Charlottesville, for instance, far-right protesters won a suit against city officials who tried to get the group to move its protest away from downtown, citing safety concerns and logistical issues. The American Civil Liberties Union backed the group on First Amendment grounds.

“I’m as upset about what happened in Charlottesville as anybody, and I detest the hate that was exhibited among the alt-left and the alt-right, but the councilman’s suggestion, I don’t think, would hold water with our Constitution and certainly with the First Amendment,” Moody said. “If we did try to do something like that, we would end up in court, end up costing the taxpayers a lot of money and end up embarrassing our city.”

Should protesters descend on Portsmouth and break the law, “we need to deal with it swiftly,” Moody said.

“You can’t abolish free speech,” he said. “Coming up with a list to keep people out of Portsmouth is just not on sound legal ground.”

What’s the money on the bet that BLM won’t be classified as a racist group?

But goons burning up university campuses and hurling bike locks at people - that’s OK because it’s for the right cause, I guess?

Why don’t you, instead of doing something blatantly unconstitutional, ban police personal from standing by and watching laws be broken without taking enforcement action.

And further ban liberal politicians from ordering them to do so.

Fine let Whitaker sign off on denying the permits and let him answer the lawsuits

And not with city attorneys

This guy really doesn’t understand how the 1st Amendment works, does he?

I may not like what you say, and may denounce you for saying it, but I will defend your right to say it, even as you make a fool of yourself.

As a novel alternative, how about trying free speech and banning violence against those exercising their free speech, and protecting them in their right to do so, even if they may seem to be detestable saying egregious things?

How about this SOB be thrown out of office due to breach of his oath and his ignorance of the law and the Constitutions?

No more Black Lives Matter?

Of course not. BLM, OWS, "antifa", Black Bloc, World Can't Wait, ANSWER, Weather Underground, Black Panters, et al are all peaceful organizations that want nothing but love and harmony.

Pi$$ on Councilman Mark Whitaker.

The Supreme Court has already ruled on this (National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie)

This moron needs to brush up on his history. The issue was decided many, many years ago when the Nazis wanted to have march in Skokie, Ill.

Portsmouth councilman wants to ban racist groups from protesting"

How about groups that advocate the violent overthrow of the American government (damn near all of these commie and anarchist groups do).

Who Is Doing the Community Organizing for Black Lives Matter Spectacle?

Not many Black Lives Matter morons would have the initiative to get a poster printed. But it's no mystery where they get the signs that they jab in the air as they chant "What do we want? Dead cops!" The supplier is printed right across the bottom: revcom.us .

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

'Rev' is for revolutionary.
'Com' is for communist
.

Revcom.us bills itself as "the voice of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA." The explicit objective is to overthrow our constitutional republic and replace it with an oligarchical collectivist dictatorship along the lines of North Korea and the Soviet Union.

Why would advocates of a communist police state agitate against the police? Because as leftists used to admit openly, the issue is never the issue.. This isn't about the police, any more than it is about blacks. It is about destabilizing the system so as to create opportunities to weaken it and eventually overthrow it.

That's what community organizing boils down to. These people have taken over the executive branch of the federal government; why would they stop there?

The next hill they take will be federal control of local police. After that, things will start to get scary.

From the website of the Revolutionary Communist Party (revcom.us):

"Create Public Opinion, Seize Power: We are preparing minds and organizing forces for the time when there is a major crack in the system, whenever it comes and wherever it comes from: an opening that makes it possible to bring the future Revolutionary Army of the Proletariat (R.A.P.) into the field and wage a revolutionary armed struggle that actually has a chance of winning.

And we have said that building our party itself is the most important part of organizing forces for revolution. This is true now, and it is true looking forward to the creation of that future R.A.P. and the waging of that armed struggle.":

The 1992 LA/Rodney King riots were instigated by the Revolutionary Communist Party...

From David Horowitz's FrontpageMag.com /DiscoverTheNetworks.org:

"Throughout its history, one of RCP's [Revolutionary Communist Party] principal objectives has been to foment civil unrest in the United States. The most notable example of such efforts occurred on April 29, 1992, when RCP members looted and trashed the downtown and government districts of Los Angeles, triggering the infamous Rodney King riots. During the days immediately preceding the violence, RCP -- which maintained close ties to the L.A. gangs known as the Crips and the Bloods -- had circulated throughout South Central Los Angeles a leaflet featuring a statement by RCP National Spokesman Carl Dix, titled 'It's Right To Rebel' -- a quote popularized by Mao Zedong.

Encouraged by Dix, RCP activists helped lead the riots that would leave 58 people dead, more than 2,300 people injured, some 5,300 buildings burned, and $1 billion in property damaged or destroyed. On the ten-year anniversary of the rioting, RCP member Joseph Veale fondly recalled the violence as 'the most beautiful, the most heroic civil action in the history of the United States.'"

Denial of rights under color of law. Anybody that decides to sue him would have a slam-dunk case.
