Reich: Trump's curious coalition
The Baltimore Sun ^ | May 22, 2018 | Robert Reich, former US Secretary of Labor

Donald Trump's strategy for keeping power is to build up his coalition of America's white working class and the nation's ownership class.

It's a curious coalition, to say the least. But if Democrats don't respond to it, it could protect Mr. Trump from impeachment and even re-elect him. It just might create a permanent Republican majority around an axis of white resentment and great wealth.

Two decades ago, Democrats and Republicans competed over the middle class. They battled over soccer moms and suburban "swing" voters.

Since then the middle class has shrunk while the working class has grown, and vast wealth has been accumulated by a comparative few who now own a large portion of America. Some of their wealth has taken over American politics.

Enter Mr. Trump.

Counties whose voters shifted from Mr. Obama to Mr. Trump in 2016 had lost economic ground to the rest of America, to an even greater extent than solidly Republican counties. Mr. Trump is counting on the unwavering support of these mostly white working-class voters.

Meanwhile, much of the ownership class has come over to Mr. Trump. He's counting on it to bankroll Republican politicians who are loyal to him.

Since becoming president, Mr. Trump has sought to reward both sides of this coalition — tossing boatloads of money to the ownership class and red meat to the white working class....

Mr. Reich is like the Colonel Klink of politics: If he tells you to cut the blue wire you should cut the red one. Do the opposite of what he suggests and you should be fine.

It's a curious coalition? LOL. It's a coalition that probably comprises about 70% of the U.S. population.

Why do these idiots talk as if impeachment is a foregone conclusion? Don’t they realize how badly the Mueller fishing expedition is going for them?

Don’t worry about the ignorant Twitter “ruling” by the so-called “Judge”. All President Trump has to do is IGNORE the so-called “Judge” and block whomever he WANTS. The so-called “Judge” has violated the separation-of-powers doctrine, and the impotent “Judge” can in no way enforce his so-called “ruling” anyway. PERIOD!

Somebody should tell Robbie that it’s called “The American Coalition” and maybe...maybe he might get it.

It's only "curious" if you're a hard-core Marxist who hasn't had an original thought since 1968.

Slavery reparations, transgenders in their daughter’s bathrooms, kneeling for the national anthem, coddling MS-13, more taxes and elitism.

I’m not saying that Reich is short, but I did see a sign at the amusement park that said, ‘Must be taller than Robert Reich to go on this ride.’

It just might create a permanent Republican majority around an axis of white traditional American (regardless of race) resentment and great wealth.

Fixed it.

Yes, Trump is creating a “curious coalition” of ALL Americans who aspire to, and benefit from, Making America Great Again.

OK. Mr. Reich, the third, this MAGA idea really is a dastardly plot to dethrone the rightful heirs to being the slave-masters of America, which is obviously people like you.

I find it very curious how men like Reich casually reference impeachment as if they consider it a mere political maneuver. No need for a crime. No need for evidence of a crime. No need for a trial. It’s just a given that more Democrats in office will lead to an impeachment.
