FULLERTON, California (CNN) -- In a suburban enclave on the outskirts of Los Angeles, Republican Young Kim, a South Korean immigrant, is running to replace retiring Rep. Ed Royce.
Kim's candidacy is years in the making for Republicans' efforts in the Los Angeles area to deepen bonds with the Asian-American community and encourage people like her to run for office.
But that effort hit a wall in 2016.
Asian-Americans, who have tended to vote for Republicans on the local level in Southern California, went for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in the area and nationally.
Now, ahead of Tuesday's primary, Democrats and Republicans in the jumbled congressional race that will feature 17 candidates on the ballot view Asian-American voters as a key demographic in their path to victory.
Kim, who spent Wednesday afternoon knocking on doors here in Fullerton, said the split between national and local offices can be explained by national Republicans focusing too much and too harshly on immigration, a comment that signals her complicated relationship with the President.
"The message is important, but I think the messengers are just as important," said Kim, who explained that Republicans win with Asian voters when they argue they are trying to support legal immigration while discouraging those who come to the country illegally. "Whenever Republicans talk about immigration, people immediately think it is the part of anti-immigrant messaging. It is not."(continued)

I’m amazed Republicans don’t dominate with Asian voters. They should. They’re natural fits for the Republican party. They work hard and study hard and achieve. Their kids get discriminated against because they as a group perform so well academically. How many do you know living on the dole? For that matter, how many work for government rather than in private business?
Unless more Russians collude by surfing the web chat rooms and giving comment.
Trump’s meeting with Kim has changed all that...
Nurses that come to my house have all told me everyone they know is voting for Trump next time around. That Korean Reunification Church is a powerful thing here.
One of my nurses, Paul told me him and his wife had been crying all week once the talks started with Kim/Moon.
Until chain migration is done away with, these people will always vote Dem. Maybe even after, who knows?
When I was in Illinois, the leader of the local Bhuddist temple was also national chair of the Laotian Republican Organization, which included both Bhuddist and Alliance Laotians and a few Vietnamese. Their headquarters was in the offices of the Family Taxpayer Network. It was amazing to see Republican candidates come into the office, beg big donor Jack Roeser for money, and totally ignore the Laotian in the room. His Bhuddist temples full of anti-communists who would give their lives to fight Communism, as so many of their family had done
When the 2d most conservative and 1st most libertarian politician in Illinois won, it was the Bhuddists who gave him the victory.
But when other conservative/libertarian candidates came in, he did not exist. We need to learn from our mistakes. The 2d and 3rd generation Laotians saw this. Gradually their vote was not as solid... people don’t like to be ignored or written off.
Lot of poor Asians in NYC - Flushing is full of them. I’m sure a lot of them are on the dole.

I’ve read that 70% of Asians voted for Obama, twice.
Bad times for Republicans. Bad Republican candidates.
Asians in the more urban and populous states, I think, voted the way their states voted, and since so many live in HI, CA, NY, NJ, MA, MD, they voted Democrat.
In previous elections, the Asian vote wasn't so heavily Democrat.
But as business owners and professionals they are natural Republicans. We must merely expend some effort.

They may be hard workers and do well academically, but their culture is naturally collective and socialist.
They used to dominate. But Democrats have chipped away at them.
California at one time was Republican. OK, a long time ago .... but Reagan was governor! Orange County was solid Republican ... now blue.
The Republican Party ought to make an effort in CA ... they do not.

All those characteristics you speak of with Asians are quite true, but they are not known as independent thinkers. That, to me is one of the roadblocks to widespread Asian voting for Republican candidates. Plus, they have a strong tendency to look out for their families and Welfare offerings, particularly to newly arrived immigrants, probably strike them as very humanitarian.
I have not seen census data so I could be wrong but I’m thinking that Chinese outnumber every other asian group combined in california. So Trump’s actions with regards to Korea and China would be looked on favorably by majorities of all groups but the chinese. Chinese majorities in California would be unfavorable to Trump. Now maybe a lot of them are not citizens but lack of citizenship does not seem to stop people from voting in California.
I spent 2 years in LA in the late 70s. I remember when the south was Republican and the north was Democrat. I may be generalizing but that is what I thought.
