This bitch needs pushback
I was born and raised in Virginia. All my family other than my mother’s father, who was originally from Tennessee, were born in VA. I was in the “hillbilly” section of far Western VA-what we call “Southwest Virginia.” It is the section west of Roanoke. Growing up all my aunts, uncles, and grandparents were Democrats. The economy was based on coal mining. They were heavily union members also. Despite all of this, it was VERY socially conservative. How you say? It’s a long story. This area is heavily dependent upon coal mining. The coal companies SEVERELY mistreated the people and workers all through the history of the area (even including bribing police and murder). They felt the unions and Democrats gave them hope to fight back. My grandparents lived through the depression also, so they saw the Democrats and Roosevelt as saviors almost. My grandparents never would have thought of voting for a Republican, but the also never would have thought of same sex marriage nor would they have thought of trashing the south or the confederate monuments. They never flinched at the sight of a confederate car (and their were many to be seen). My grandmother, who could not drive, rode the church bus 3 times a week to and from church and her life revolved around her Lord. None of them were socialists.
Now things have changed. Everything west of Roanoke and south of Richmond is pretty much Republican. My hometown county of Buchanan voted for Trump at the highest percentage of any county in the nation. So much so that the Wall Street Journal came down and interviewed people and did a story about it. Many of my family are now Republicans. Even during this sea-change, the culture wars came. Years ago the county attracted a law school. Many of the students are foreign and from other states. Our county has a high school called Hurley High. Hurley’s football team is called the “Rebels.” Years ago a student at the law school complained and said they should change their name and mascot. She was met with instant revolt. People started putting bumper stickers on their cars for the Rebels. People started demonstrating outside the law school, waving confederate flags and tooting horns. People wrote opinion letters to the paper telling her to basically return from whence she came. A county representative ran a campaign based upon passing a county ordinance keeping the Rebels as a mascot and won the election. Hurley High retains the Rebels as mascot and the confederate flag is still painted on the side of the school, but for how long?
Just thought I’d share this (long) story with you about REAL Virginians. This woman who owns this joint does not represent the real VA-she is a northern colonizer who hate’s the culture and people she’s moved into. She needs to meet a few REAL Virginians...
No, that was sarcasm meant to marginalize Streep’s recognition.
Don’t stop with that.
Keep going. It’s hilarious.
This apology is meaningless. In fact more of a cynical attempt at damage control, phony good PR. Those directly responsible haven’t even pretended to issue a disingenuously contrite and remorseful apology so until that ever happens they know where can put their non apology.
