Can Democrats keep avoiding impeachment talk?

As the swirl of legal drama around Donald Trump grows, it will be increasingly difficult for Democrats to avoid direct questions about the "I word" - impeachment - even if the topic makes many on the left squirm with discomfort.

On Tuesday Donald Trump's former personal lawyer stood in a New York courtroom and said then-candidate Trump directed him to commit campaign finance crimes.

If Mr Cohen is to be believed - and his lawyer has produced an audio recording that appears to be at least partial corroboration - it draws the president closer to what is now-documented illegal activity.

What does US law say?

There's an open legal debate about whether a sitting president can be indicted for a crime. The constitution and federal law are silent on the issue, but Department of Justice guidelines say no.

The consensus recourse for a president who is accused of serious misdeeds is impeachment by a majority of the House of Representatives and a vote to remove by two-thirds of the US Senate.

This, obviously, is both a tall order and an intrinsically political act.

While there has been talk among liberal ranks about impeachment virtually from the day Mr Trump took office, mainstream Democratic politicians have been extremely uneasy to address the subject directly....

There’s an open legal debate about whether a sitting president can be indicted for a crime.

There is a reason a sitting President can not be indicted for a crime, and we are living through it right now.

The losing political party could continue to make up stuff, and eventually a politically motivated prosecutor would be able to indict a President.

Once this process began, it would never end.

Every election would be contested until we become Italy with a new government every few months.

I don’t think the Democrat leadership has thought this through to it’s logical conclusion.

Most of those polls you and I see are there to demoralize us. The Democrats have internal polls that are realistic. They know just how popular President Trump really is across this country. That’s why they only let jaybirds like Maxine Waters talk smack.

Can the leftist freaks impeach Trump without igniting a shooting civil war?

They have made it inevitable. We would leave them alone, but they will not leave us alone. They are miserable children at war with GOD, who must make the rest of us miserable.

Apparently, Trump told his lawyer Cohen to pay a woman.

There is an implicit assumption that it should be done in a legal manner.

It would have been possible to do so in a legal manner.

Manner 1: Cohen could have made a few call to lawyer friends who would have had to make more calls.

Manner 2: Cohen could walk down Fifth Avenue with a collections can and proof that he is Trump’s lawyer.

Manner 3: Cohen could have called Trump campaign headquarters and got them to write a check.

Mueller lacks sufficient proof to prove Trump committed a crime.

Trump needs to get good lawyers.

Campaign finance law has a few more days than Cohen has freedom.

Citizens United will be only part of the writing on its tombstone.

“Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press”

Trump needed to speak effectively to the American people in mid-October 2016.

Campaign finance laws are ridiculous IMO. There are there really to empower the insiders and really why should there be a limit of spending in campaigns?

From what I understand is one can be at fault of these laws just be default. You don’t have to go out with a motivation to violate them.

So they would have to prove that Trump actually set out to violate them, no?

Settling a legal dispute is not a crime, nor is it something appropriately covered under election law.
