How Much Trouble Is Ted Cruz Really In?
FiveThirtyEight ^ | August 31, 2018 | Dhrumil Mehta and Janie Velencia

Welcome to Pollapalooza, our weekly polling roundup.

Poll of the week

A new Texas Senate poll came out this week showing Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke within 1 point of Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. It gave new life to a familiar question: Could Texas finally flip blue? Normally, this would be the point where we lecture everyone about the dangers of putting too much stock in one poll. But this poll wasn’t even much of an outlier — it came on the heels of a few others that also show O’Rourke within a few points of Cruz. That’s an awfully close race for a state that President Trump won by 9 points in 2016. Is it time to start betting on a Democrat in Texas?

We still say you should hold onto your chips.

OK, first the new survey: Emerson College’s poll of registered voters, conducted online and through robo-calls, reported 38 percent support for Cruz and 37 percent for O’Rourke, well within the poll’s 4-point margin of error. About a fifth of respondents remained undecided.

Emerson was the sixth consecutive pollster in our database to find the Texas Senate race within single digits....

I think he wins; however, anybody with a lick of sense isn't going to get all excited about Ted Cruz. Sure Texans will vote for him as he is a reliable conservative - this is probably the best we can ever expect from somebody who wants to be a whore err I mean senator.

We got a decent measure of him last campaign and at a personal level he just another senator cut from same cloth as the rest - self serving gas bag.

He was way cooler when he was reading Green Eggs and Ham then when he forgot to endorse Donald Trump at the convention - he really damaged himself politically.

Stupidity is in high supply on Free Republic.

Reno is either the biggest damn fraud or the biggest damn fool that constantly posts on Cruz threads.

Emerson College, is that the one in downtown Boston? So they polled registered voters in Texas. What the hell do they know about Texas and Texas voters?

What was the sample size? What was the distribution across geographic areas (or by ships at sea). Texas is a pretty big state. Did they sample a hundred voters in North, South, East, or West Texas? Or was it Dallas, Houston, Lufkin/Tyler/Beaumont, Lubbock/Amarillo, or San Antonio/El Paso?

What genders or sexual orientation (male, female, or other) were represented ? How many of the registered voters were in what age groups? What were their ethnic origins? Any of these factors or others, if weighed too heavily or too little, could easily skew the poll.

I call this bullsh*t. I know how badly Beto’s supporters want to people think that Cruz is in trouble. It’s so easy to rig a poll to show Beto is a contender when he isn’t even close. Remember when the polls showed Wendy Davis was going to turn Texas purple?

But if the Leftists carefully poll certain select groups it always falls near or within the margin of error (a figure they pull out of their a$$ to make you think it is accurate) and viola, you have a close race. And now we know how Beto proposes to turn Texas blue.

Mark Twain, a real journalist, said it best when he said “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics” or something to that effect.

P.S. Sorry, I didn’t know Mark Twain was one of those racists the Left warned us about. Also, my sympathy goes out to Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher (father of statistics) who is probably spinning in his grave...

I’m not buying that Cruz is in trouble but if he does lose, I do know that I’m not going to have any more patience for those Freepers from Texas who are always bragging all superior-like, that their state is the cat’s pajamas and everybody else lives in a blue state craphole.

You guys need to let up on 2nddiv. He supported a candidate in the primary. Once the primary was over he supported Trump.

There was a lot of bad blood on both sides during the primary.

I’ve never voted for Cruz in any primary but I’m pulling the lever for him every time in the general.

This pissing match should of ended 2 years ago.

Trump only winning Texas by 9 points when blueblood Romney won by 16 pts four years earlier is cause for alarm. Texas is changing rapidly (and ironically because it has such a good economy as the draw).

After the Trump rally for Cruz, Cruz’s numbers will climb rapidly.

Beto is "Abortion Barbie" on steroids. I went to one of his townhalls just to see who beat Reyes in the 'rat primary and what a hoot. He will not come within a thousand miles of Cruz and a debate stage. Yard signs, fake polls and thirty second sound bytes are all he's got.

A trivia question for political junkies:
Who was the last El Paso politician to win a statewide election?

Since my library time is limited,I'll give you the answer:No one, none, zero, zip, nada and there is a reason for it.

Remember the same pollers stated that it would be a runaway for Benghazi Clinton .... a lot of the Marxist State Media hoping for the “me too” voting for the winner.

None. IF he loses, which is hard to believe, Trump will make him AG and he will kick ass. Or, better yet, put him on the SC.

Yep, and Lyn’ Ted was so trounced and discredited that he should have retired from the Senate to make way for a Trump Republican that could win. Now, instead, he’s a loser begging for President Trump’s help. Begging for it without ever coming clean on his lies, without stopping his shameful campaign tactics, without campaigning, etc. And here on FR, yes, we want Republicans to win, but too many people forgive, forget, ignore, and make excuses. The results are yours the next time he undermine’s Trump on amnesty, ObamaCare, the border, fair trade, etc. Mark my words, he has before and he will again. Ignore your values and vote for him, hold your nose and vote for him, or do whatever you want. Just realize how you are selling your conservative values short when you do—don’t lie about it, don’t insult, don’t deflect. Own it. And don’t whine when people call you on it. Or, later, when they tell you “I told you so.”

blue state craphole

**************

There are blue areas around the state.

Cruz maybe in a closer race than most of the other statewide races.

There are statewide races such as governor on down thru the
state legislature, Judges, etc. So I doubt the GOP voters
will vote for their candidates and omit or vote for the dem
in the US Senate race.

To: SamAdams76; All
Freepers from Texas who are always bragging all superior-like, that their state is the cat’s pajamas and everybody else lives in a blue state craphole.

I take it you haven't been to Austin lately. One of the best examples of a "blue craphole" there is anywhere. Austin is only a temporary thorn in our side. But even so, we as Texans have a "spirit" we share and our core beliefs are righteous. We've seen six flags fly over Texas and we are still hangin' in there. That "spirit" has helped us to overcome many adversities and prevail throughout our history.

We believe our rights are given by GOD, not government. We are prepared to defend our rights, our families, and ourselves by whatever means, if that becomes necessary.

We are a "melting pot" of peoples too. We speak English, German, Spanish, French, and whatever else is required to communicate among us. We respect and celebrate the best ethnic traditions of our people. But as Texans, we are one state under GOD.

We were once a nation state ourselves. We have rebelled against more than one tyrant nation. We have joined or seceded from others. Whatever we choose in the future, those are options we have experienced before.

We are not forcing anyone to come to Texas. It will be of your own free-will if you choose. But when you get to Texas I hope you are seeking the spirit and independence that we have inherited. Texans do not feel superior to anyone, just thankful to GOD for our nation, our state, and it's people.

When it comes to voting, Texans ARE unpredictable. But if perchance Beto is elected, it wouldn't be the first time Texas has had to deal with a tyrant, nor the last.
