There are two immediate reasons that President Trump might have decided that, after weeks of holding his fire, it was worth disparaging Christine Blasey Ford during a rally in Mississippi on Tuesday night.
The first is that Fords allegation that Trumps nominee to the Supreme Court, Brett M. Kavanaugh, had assaulted her when the two were in high school was putting Kavanaughs nomination at risk. Trump insists that he punches his opponents only after they punch him first, which isnt true, but its certainly unusual for him to incur political damage without lashing out. On Tuesday, that moment arrived for Ford (whose opposition is to Kavanaughs nomination, not to Trump).
The second is that Republicans increasingly appear to believe that the Kavanaugh fight is energizing their voters. His nomination appears to be the most polarizing issue of Trumps presidency, and there was some evidence from polling that rising to Kavanaughs defense was spurring more interest in the midterms on the right.
On Wednesday afternoon, we got new evidence to that effect in the form of a poll from NPR and Marist.
That survey, completed this week, found a negligible difference between Democrats and Republicans in the percentage saying that this years congressional elections were very important. (Nearly everyone thinks the election is important to some degree.)[continued]

Is the bear Catholic? Does the Pope crap in the woods?
No, but I expect to enjoy the schadenfreude when they admit a little bit of the truth. And I do, I really do. The cockroaches are scurrying for cover, because the light has been turned on.
No, and Philip Head Bump is an especially deranged communist loser, but some of them are cogent enough to realize when they’ve stepped on a landmine.
If Kavanaugh goes down in defeat, I think you’re going to see a red tsunami, but I think they’re still going to get walloped even if he’s confirmed. They’ve awoken a sleeping giant.
Punched? As in Clinton’s “puts some ice on it” rapegate?!!! Freakin writer..I bet you he wears a pink pussy hat?! Soy assbutt!!
Is the Pope Catholic? Ya don’t know, anymore.
I suspect this circus will push some Dem leaning Catholics into the R column.

If Senator Collins and Senator Murkowski vote “No” on Kavanaugh I Hope that President Trump does the following:
1) Declare that after the midterms that he will renominate Kavanaugh.
2) Ask all Republican voters to abstain from voting for Senator Collins and Senator Murkowski because they are “Enemies within the gates” and that they should have switched parties and run as Democrats.
3) Call on Republicans everywhere to “Vote as iT their Lives, Their Fortunes, And Their Sacred Honor depends upon it. If the leftists can do this to a fine man like Judge Kavenaugh Imagine what they intend to do to you?”
Roger that! I can't be 100% sure but I 'believe' he is communist first then maybe somewhere down the line he is a Catholic... maybe. Maybe a lapsed Catholic plant.
Never in my craziest dreams did I think something like this would happen. Still can't be sure it did but it sure feels that way.
The truth is, the Partisan Media Shills have been driving Pubbies to the poll more surely than a free van for shut-ins. The Mueller witch hunt has kept the pot boiling, the Kavanaugh witch hunt is just an additional reminder to show up in November. Thanks 2ndDivisionVet.
I’m not sure confirmation lessens the tsunami. People are pissed - and many see the RBG situation, and the crap coming down the pike for that.
The desperation on part of the dems is clear - and I personally think that it will cause a higher republican turnout - nobody trusts these jerks any more.
I am worried. Mitch hasn’t said today he has the votes.
If what is happening with the Supreme court nomination process does not motivate people to vote demo_rats out of office, then nothing will.
JoMa
T the great too fast stepping on all of them gosh I love the, sound of scrunch
Mitch has been a great leader on Supreme Court and other judicial appointments, if nothing else.
If the Washington Post is printing this, the Democrat internal polls must be really bad.
I know. This seems to be the one issue he stands firm on.
Catholic here. I dont pay attention to the pope. He is totally out of touch with American Catholics. His latest stupid comment that priests should not marry couples who are pregnant.
Did the pope see the movie Spotlight?
