The White House on Friday expressed confidence the Senate will confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
"We sure hope so. I think we should," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said when asked by reporters if Kavanaugh has enough votes.
"Moving into the weekend, we certainly hope the Senate will vote to confirm him," she added.
The comments come after Kavanaugh cleared a key procedural hurdle in the Senate, setting up a final vote on his confirmation as early as Saturday.
But the vote was full of drama and was called without Kavanaugh knowing beforehand whether he would have enough support to advance. The vote passed by a narrow 51-49 margin, indicating a confirmation vote could be a nail-biter.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), the only Republican who voted against moving forward with the nomination, said she decided which way to vote while walking into the Senate chamber.
Sanders said White House officials have been in touch with key senators in the lead-up to the vote.
"Weve been in constant contact with a number of senators since this process began and were going to continue those efforts right up until the last minute because this is such an important moment in our countrys history," she said earlier in an interview with Fox News.
The White House received a boost Friday afternoon when a key undecided GOP senator, Arizona's Jeff Flake, said he would vote to confirm Kavanaugh.
Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) remain the other undecided votes, though both voted Friday to end debate.
Kavanaugh's nomination has been embroiled in controversy since multiple women came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct. The judge has denied the allegations.
They “hope” he will be confirmed..all depends on Flake, Collins, and Manchin since Porky Murkowski is a for sure no
The pork needs to be cut.
No pork for Alaska.
President Trump will do whatever it takes to win. The rest are apathetic at best and playing for the other side of the uniparty at worst.
Then expose the whole smear operation behind this fiasco, to beat the Democrats in the midterms.
Then prosecute the conspirators, to dismantle their operation before 2020.
They are taking this very seriously and anyone who votes 'no' will end their political career.
Read the executive summary of the FBIs supplemental investigation into Kavanaugh allegations
“Conclusion
The Supplemental Background Investigation confirms what the Senate Judiciary Committee concluded after its investigation: there is no corroboration of the allegations made by Dr. Ford or Ms. Ramirez.”
the GOP is establishment is part of the democrat-republican uni-party. They are the same.
As we used to type in typing class, Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their party.
Is that that Amy Schumer gal?
Whether Kavanaugh is confirmed or rejected Trump- and we- will win. Kavanaugh will not lose any more than he has because he will retain his judgeship on the District Court. The Democrats and especially certain Democrats will lose bi.
I’m pretty confident as well. The question is whether it is tomorrow, or after President Trump nominates him again, and the pent up anger of Patriots is manifest on election day.
Yup...
In any event, we should hope they are working diligently to update Amy Barrett's portfolio (and her appearance preparation).
If K is confirmed, that work will not be a wasted exercise, given the fact there could be a second vacancy at any moment.
If their hope doesn't bear fruit, wouldn't be great if Trump announced her nomination a few minutes after the vote is announced?
