Kavanaugh Killed the ‘Never Trump’ Movement
The Daily Beast ^ | October 9, 2018 | Matt Lewis

Posted on 10/09/2018 3:09:27 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Some Never Trumpers are now on board for 2020. Others are leaving the Republican Party for good. One way or the other, it’s all about you know who.

Resistance is futile. Long on life-support, the Never Trump “resistance” movement within the Republican Party was finished off by the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation fight.

Consider the dichotomy that has emerged in the last week: We saw people like Erick Erickson, who once wrote a piece headlined “I Will Not Vote For Donald Trump. Ever,” suggesting they will vote for Trump in 2020, and people like Tom Nichols, formerly of The Federalist, saying Kavanaugh’s confirmation was the final straw (he quit the GOP).

Nichols and Erickson reacted to the exact same news in exactly opposite ways.

The Kavanaugh hearing essentially radicalized Never Trumpers. Some—as part of the GOP base’s backlash against the left’s attacks—are coming home and supporting Trump. Others—perhaps because their hatred of Trump has only intensified—were pushed completely from the fold. This process has been going on for a long time, but one gets the sense that the fight over Kavanaugh was the end of the road.

Where you stand on this probably depends on where you sit. Personally, I see the group who submitted to their Trumpy fate as making an understandable submission to the inexorable forces of tribalism and partisanship. Consider Erickson’s plight. If you are a conservative, you, too, might well be repelled by the left’s behavior last week.

As Erickson writes, “Trump is neither an ambassador for my values nor the articulate champion of my principles I would prefer. But he is a safe harbor in a progressive storm that seeks to both destroy my values and upend our constitutional republic.”(continued)

That’s what I’ve been seeing. The #NeverTrumpers thought that the vitriol against Trump was because of Trump. Now they’re finally waking up to the fact that Trump is just the person willing to step out in front of the slings and arrows, but they’re coming for all of us.

What the heck are Erickson's values? And if Trump isn't an ambassador for Erickson's values then just how are Erickson's values different from the progressive storm?

Nice article.
Myself, I like the idea of a triage for the NT:

Folks with good positions on the issues, who were inexplicably blinded (Erickson, French, etc.) bring ‘em onboard

Folks who were DBags before Trump (Wilson, Wallace, Rubin, Schmidt) F ‘em

Cap’n Billy - keep him around for laughs. I understand where he was going - an Epicurean, he wanted to write for the Michelin Guide. But looking like the Michelin Man was not the way to do it.

... by showing conservatives and RINOs that they both succeed by working together.

That’s been the Republican Party’s weakness for decades- mostly that RINOs wooldn’t do anything real for conservatives- but never mind pointing fingers.

We worked together and won, we can work together and keep winning.

And there’s not NEARLY enough of them.

The false alarm bells have been going off on here forever.

Fully 86 percent of the country accept Trump as their legitimate president.

It’s on par with past presidencies.

14 percent “coming after us”, when us is 6 times their number, isn’t exactly the scariest thing in the world.

a party leader should not be treated like a king...
not in this country, anyway

but all the blind, without cause or reason....GOP-E opposition and undermining of our elected president has been just sickening, awful. if someone gonna oppose him on a specific issue or proposal.. they should be able to explain good reasons for it

we are hoping PDJT will remember his campaign pledge to Drain the Swamp.

its desperately needed

These never Trumpers are all paid professionals. The Never trump pay masters have finally (after 3 years) realized that they are on the cusp of no credibility forever. It was a business decision going in and it is a business decision coming out. These professional conservatives were blind to what every conservative in the country figured out right away about Trump...He may actually advance our cause (even if only 50%). I think everyone took the 50% deal on Trump because we knew everyone else would be a sellout. Of course the Never Trumpers were never going to be sold out because they are the professional conservatives, they were going to win either way. And as it turns out Trump has not made us 50% happy it is nearly 100% - even on trade he seems to be doing the right thing

The ultimate reason I love Trump....He has unmasked SO MUCH PHONINESS.

Apparently Tom Nichols still doesn’t see it. Proves that even really smart people are not correct all of the time.

Erick Erickon’s values are likely to tied to the will of his donors. Erickson said he “might” vote for Trump in 2020, he did not commit.

Never Trumpers are very much alive, but they need to hide somewhat as Trump keeps winning.

There’s no way that hard core GOPe commentators like Rick Wilson, George Will, and Kristol will ever buy into Trump. Follow the money and their donors.
